Hmm... quarantine question

So Takahashi-san joined in the expedition to Atami today (more detail about that tomorrow) and gave me a small farewell gift of some small bags containing incense - for putting in a drawer etc. The issue is - it's incense. I carefully opened one of them up and inside a bag inside the bag (so not sitting loose) - the incense is a powder, probably ( Read more... )

Chances are if you brought them into the country they would give you the option to irradiate them, but that is quite pricey. My first suggestion would be to contact customs and ask them what the go would be and see if they would be deemed to be a risk - you might be surprised. You also might not, but they sound pretty so it would be worth a go. :-)

I've never had a problem with bringing incense home when I travel overseas.

Maybe take them all as is, including the one you've dissected so you can show the quarantine officers what the innards look like? Then you could open the currently unopened ones and remove the actual incense in front of them if necessary or leave them intact if it's allowed? I've never actually had quarantine look carefully at anything I carried though so I don't know how patient they'd be about you cutting them open while they wait...

Hmm, I have a policy of not carrying strange powders across international borders personally, but then I'm a bit paranoid. ;)
