So with assistance from my nearest friendly linux geek (thank you Mr uniqueid) I can now has ubuntu on my EeePC... much more friendly and customisable than the Xandros OS that came pre-installed. I have the reinstallation disks for Xandros as well as a backup of what "flea' (my Eee) was before the installation of Ubuntu.

But to be honest it was more likely for things to go boom in a way I couldn't fix while I had Xandros. At least with Ubuntu it's more likely that Mr David can help me out...

If you go with the Windows version you'll have a lot less memory to work with so will really want to look into additional memory (good size card in the SD slot) - it all depends which Eee you'd be looking at, but with the 900 (the one I have) the difference between the Windows and Linux version is 8GB.

Well I've had Ubuntu on my desktop computer for at least a year and a half now and I've really appreciated the ease with which I can do things. Not having the BSOD or Rainbow Scrolling Wheel of Doom (the mac equivalent) is a nice relief although there is the unsolved mystery of firefox freezing.

Swapping to ubuntu on a computer I use more often however will be the real test. I think the biggest issue I face work wise is compatibility swapping between open office and microsoft office, but the relative simplicity of ubuntu on a travel computer will make computing when I travel so much easier.
