But to be honest it was more likely for things to go boom in a way I couldn't fix while I had Xandros. At least with Ubuntu it's more likely that Mr David can help me out...
If you go with the Windows version you'll have a lot less memory to work with so will really want to look into additional memory (good size card in the SD slot) - it all depends which Eee you'd be looking at, but with the 900 (the one I have) the difference between the Windows and Linux version is 8GB.

Swapping to ubuntu on a computer I use more often however will be the real test. I think the biggest issue I face work wise is compatibility swapping between open office and microsoft office, but the relative simplicity of ubuntu on a travel computer will make computing when I travel so much easier.
