Sometimes I just don't understand...

What motivates people to do such nasty things.

Someone stole my bike from uniqueid/naturalredhead's place where I had left it while I moved across town. It's all expectation, though. You had reason to expect that the bike you own would remain yours, whereas your Iranian workmates had no reason to believe the Ayatollahs would allow the wrong offically-selected puppet to be installed as a "democratically" elected president against their wishes. So you can be disappointed, whereas the most they can do is be resigned.

I'm not so sure. The thing that the Western protesters are missing is that the four canidates for the presidency were all pretty much identical: members of past or present governments, appointed and approved by the Ayatollah, and largely indistinguishable in their policies. This wasn't a Bush-vs-Obama thing; at best it was a Nelson-vs-Turnbull thing, only without the former's charisma or the latter's humility.

So the real news is that the religious leaders don't give a flying fuck about how the rest of the world sees them: they're in charge, they'll make pitifully meaningless promises and then break them. It's sad, but I'm surprised that anyone can find the enthusiasm to complain.
