Actually, so far the move has gone VERY smoothly, overall. Jackie and Bertie came yesterday morning to take me to the airport. I was in a bit of a state, throwing last minute things in the suitcases at the last minute, cancelling the phone and the internet connection, and checking to make sure I didn't leave anything. I still managed to leave a picture and two bags of spices/oils, but I will contact the landlord and tell him to do with him as he will.
But, once I got to the airport, things went fine. I checked in all four suitcases (they let me go through even though one was a bit overweight), went through security, and then met Shyrril for coffee inside T2. It was great to see her, and she assured me that the second new country experience would be easier than the first b/c I would have an idea of what to expect, and what steps to take to get everything sorted.
Then, I proceeded to the gate, got on the plane, and 1 hour and 1/2 later I had officially moved countries! Too surreal! Someone from school (Veronika) picked me up, my suitcases were the first off the plane (OMG! That NEVER happens), she drove me to the flat, Joan met us here, she gave me a basket of groceries and, voila, I had officially arrived!
Yesterday Joan and I chatted for quite a while, and he made dinner. He seems very nice, and is also a former VIF teacher who has taught in both the States and in England, so we have a lot in common. He went out with a few mates for a farewell dinner last night, which gave me the chance to chill out a bit, and get my suitcases organized.
The flat is as large and full of light as I remember it to be. The kitchen is small, and not as nice as my previous flat's kitchen, but it will do. The bathroom is large, but also not as nice. But, after he leaves I'll give the place 'a woman's touch,' and I'm sure it will make a nice place to be for 2 years. Lots of nice tiling and wood furniture, so it has potential. He's leaving for Barcelona tomorrow, so maybe I can make a start, although I really want him to check out with the landlord before I change anything around.
This morning my boxes arrived - a day early! Joan says that's German efficiency for me! Cool! Although, my back has had enough lifting to last it a while! I'm glad that he was here to help me carry the boxes upstairs, as I nearly hurt myself a few times! But, they're here, and it looks as if everything is in one piece.
Today, he is going to show me around the town and get me oriented. I also want to post a letter or two and possibly get a mobile phone set up. We'll see.
So, step by step, I am on my way to becoming 'official,' here. I'll keep you posted. And, it's sunny and warm! Hooray!
Miss you all!
