"To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. I mean, it kind of looked like it was coming when they didn't tour. But I held out hope it was just an aberration.
I'm really, really hoping that in three-five years they'll be like... wait! That thing we used to do! And do a reunion tour or something. But they're R.E.M. So they might not. And that sort of dignified sticking with doing things their way is what I love about them. Oh dear.

I was just hoping the lack-of-tour thing was them needing some down-time, or something. And I don't think they've always toured behind albums in the past, so.
Yeah, I emailed my dad about it, and he was all, Trust me, there will be reunions and future albums. And I was all: okay, first of all, dad, your assurance of this kind of thing is like the KISS OF DEATH. And secondly, with this band, probably not. *sigh* I just kind of figured that after thirty years, they were past the break-up point, or something.

I don't even know what to say. It's like a little death and I find myself trying to rationalize it. Like, "They'll tour in a few years!" I mean God knows Peter can't keep himself off the road.

Like people who get divorced after fifty years!
But then, when I think of it, of course they would come out and say what's going on instead of just letting people wonder and slowly fade out. It's the R.E.M. way.
Dammit.
