When you write about something in an online journal, you're sharing it with the whole world (or just your friends, depending). You're saying "hey! This is how I feel about things, this is what I think about things, this is what happened in my life today!" For a lot of those negative reasons you mentioned, I do options 1 and 2. I'm a much worse person in my private diary - swearing, thinking only of myself, getting unjustly angry at people, etc. : ) I see my online journal as a way to write about my life and communicate with my friends, and I do definitely temper what I say.

There's a lot to be said for not caring about what you write in your journal or how people will take it. That seems very freeing. I guess I don't do that as much because I'm worried that I will hurt someone with my rants. Usually I feel much differently about a topic the next day after a rant, anyway. Also, comment flame wars can make me unreasonably angry for days! ("Someone on the Internet is wrong!")

But I say good for you for speaking your mind! Was this rant brought on by something in particular?
