My wife actually had the EXACT same thing happen to her; she had met a guy off okcupid and was talking with him, having great conversations with him, and then suddenly he deleted his account. Some guy in Kentucky, I think. I wonder if it was the same person? She's had horrible luck on okcupid, I've actually had great luck (it's unfortunate she's straight; women -- at least at our age once the crazy settles down -- tend to be better behaved in dating than men in my experience)
Mostly I think the problem is that some people online are weasels, and are prone to snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. I guess sitting at home being alone isn't as scary as actually meeting people. Or as fun, but, you have to have a backbone to recognize that.
Sorry this happened, but it's not always like that.
