I'm not using either one, but I've read a good bit about both of them. Check the LJ community vaginapagina or even better, iud_divas for more information and personal stories. From what I hear the mirena lessens periods, but it does so through hormones, so you may not want that since you've already had a hormone related issue. The paraguard tends to cause heavier bleeding, but that's not true for everyone. If I were you I would post to one of those communities and explain your situation, the people are more than helpful and many have used one or both and can give you more specific info. I'm kind of jealous, actually, I had asked about getting an IUD but my gyn made me try nuvaring first. I like nuvaring alot, but not having to worry about it for 5 years would be nice too :)

The nuvaring is hormone based, but like the mirena it delivers the hormones locally so there is less risk of side effects. Of course, since you've already had a side effect it may not be a good option for you. I love it though, and I would never go back on the pill. I'll stick with the nuvaring or go with an IUD if for some reason the nuvaring doesn't work out for me in the future.
