Imaginary Garden

It's a good thing I'm not starting seeds inside, or else I'd be disappointed that the handful of spinach and lettuce seeds I tossed into some lonely pots haven't done very well (read: I have exactly one spinach seedling and two lettuce seedlings). It's a good thing I'm not starting seeds inside, or else I'd feel guilty about letting the other handful of lettuce, spinach, and radish seeds I sprouted on a paper towel languish for several days before tossing them into another lonely pot.

All of this not-starting-inside has been instructive, though... Did you know that seeds are really picky little buggers? Granted, it's probably too cold in my dining room to be doing this at all, but I've already gotten a head-start on this summer's Learning Experience. And actually, next year I will start all sorts of things inside, because then I can keep a closer eye on things and not worry about squirrels eating the seeds or weeds coming up at the same time or all of those other horror stories my gardening friends have told me. Besides, it's so comforting to have tiny little green things poking up their heads in early April, when everything outside is still so damn dreary.

So, next year will be the year of the Great Seedling Experiment. Just as long as "next year" doesn't preclude all the extra egg cartons lying around my kitchen from accidentally filling up with little handfuls of dirt and a few seeds this weekend, or those egg cartons from getting set down on the seedling warming pad that my Real Pickles friend is dropping off tomorrow. That wouldn't be starting seeds indoors, that would just be getting a jump start on next year.

Tra, la!
