if you subscribe to the knobs-list on yahoogroups, an archive will appear where a lot of people already answered this question. all musicians in 'our' scene.

an allround for stage definitly shure, 58, 57, some cheapo version, no problem. but for fieldrecording (in combination with f.e. a MD recorder) there are much better and cheaper solutions.

i'm serious though, check the archives on [knobs] and you will find a good solution.

i presume you already know not to listen to these dorkwads suggesting shure sm-57s and 58s. those are dynamic mics, specifically for live performance and an exceedingly poor choice for recording vocals or just about anything else. they can be used in conjunction with other mics to record guitar amps SOMETIMES but only in a bind, and you can use them on vocals IF you plan on using heavy distortion and/or pitch shifting, but otherwise just no.

you can pick up a cheap but acceptable condenser mic for as little as $100 if you're on a tight budget; for anything much nicer than that you're gonna have to do some reading.

yeah well, I am just starting here and 100$ is about what my budget will allow me to have for now. Although honestly, what I really was looking for is more documentation about microphones for field recording so I can draw my own conclusion.
