Welcome back. That set up doesn't sound so bad for being back home w/ your mom gone...
And I hear you on the second hand smoke in other countries thing...enough people smoking that you might as well take out your lungs and leave them there.

I feel you on the second-hand smoke thing. Japan was one giant ashtray that just happened to have people living in it.
