“Hyung.”

“...”

“Hyung.”

“What?”

“So I met this girl.”

“What?!”

Kyungsoo spluttered, quickly looking up at Jongin who was looking at him seriously, eyes earnest, body tense.

“And I was wondering if you could--,” Jongin repeated.

“When?” Kyungsoo demanded, trying to remember a time he was not around his roommate. Their schedules have been crazy. “How did you manage to find the time to sneak off?” He asked incredulously. “You haven’t been out of our sight since debut.”

Jongin muttered something that he could barely hear. Kyungsoo leaned in slightly.

“I met her online,” the younger muttered again.

The older gawked, eyes wider than normal.

“You met her where?!”

“I said,” Jongin huffed, face beet red - or more chocolatey, because of his tan, “I met her. Over. The Internet.” He emphasized, not sure if he should laugh or cry at his hyung’s eyes grower bigger with every word.

Kyungsoo took a deep breath and tried to calm himself down. It’s not like he was so old-fashioned that he would disapprove of his roommate’s online activities. It’s not 1999, after all. People met people online all the time. And people got super stalkers online all the time.

“Jongin-ah... Is she...?”

“She’s not a sasaeng fan. I haven’t told her who I am yet.” Kyungsoo breathed a sigh of relief and moved closer to him.

“Okay. So you wanted me to do something for you?”

“Um....”

“Um...?”

Jongin fiddled with his fingers and stared at the floor.

“Okay...” Kyungsoo breathed out and racked his brain. “So... Tell me a bit of her.”

“I was looking for international penpals, you know, because, well, I just want to get to know them, right? Except nowadays it’s all over email, and not actually pen and paper. Because that’s just so old-fashioned, you know?”

Kyungsoo nodded, pretending to understand why they wouldn’t just write letters. He still insisted on sending letters to his old friends. He always got less-than-courteous replies on his phone ('For chrissake's, Soo, who many times do I have to tell you I CAN'T WRITE?')

“So I started emailing her. She’s in California. She’s so funny, and down to earth, and not like the other girls, you know?” Jongin gushed, and Kyungsoo tried not to feel like a parent whose child is growing up too fast. “And since, you know, we’re going there soon, I wanted to...”

“...You wanted to meet her.”

“Yeah.” Jongin buried his face in his hands. “That’s crazy, isn’t it? Stupidest idea ever.”

It wouldn’t be nice if Kyungsoo agreed with him so directly, so he just rubbed the younger’s back, waiting for him to talk again.

“Have you... asked her?”

“I told her we’re going to be at Disneyland.”

“You didn’t,” Kyungsoo whispered, scandalized. His hands immediately flew to cover his mouth.

“So I was wondering if... If you could cover for me, when we get there.” Jongin sat up and looked at his hyung head on, eyes peering into his.

Kyungsoo gulped audibly, forcing his tongue to move.

“S-sure.”

This was a bad idea. A bad, bad idea.

Kyungsoo kept an eye on Jongin the whole time they were at Disneyland. When Jongin nodded at him and motioned to the older that he was going, Kyungsoo nodded back and looked around, hoping no one else noticed him slip away.

He didn’t have to wait too long for Jongin to come back. He felt the anxiousness fall away, happy that all the ducklings were back together.

While everyone was happily chattering, being the overgrown children they were, Jongin was mopey, sad, even. Except for the time he took a selca with Luhan hyung, his eyes were dull.

When Yixing approached Jongin with some cotton candy, the other shook the cotton off the paper cone, put the cone against his forehead and charged at the Chinese boy. His normally spacey hyung avoided Jongin for the rest of the day. Kyungsoo saw the exchange, and frowned.

When Chanyeol sneaked up behind the dancer and tried to scare him, Jongin gave him a glare reserved for the most maniacal of MAMA music video scenes. The happy virus did not look too happy. Kyungsoo saw that too, and frowned some more.

Kyungsoo was really confused and worried.

Finally, Kyungsoo slipped beside Jongin as the group was walking, matching his steps with the younger.

“Did you get to meet her?” He tried to be sneaky, keeping his voice low and appearing nonchalant.

He got a grunt.

“You mean she didn’t...?”

“Oh she was there.” His voice was sarcastic. Kyungsoo didn’t like that.

“Did she recognize you?”

“Yup.”

“What?!”

“Was really happy and all that. I thought it was fine. Then the first thing she asks me after she finishes staring at me is ‘Where’s Lay?’” Jongin made his voice higher, poorly imitating a girl. “‘Where’s Chanyeol?’” The other two peeked over their shoulders, as if they sensed they were being talked about, but quickly turned around after seeing Jongin’s face.

“Jongin...” Kyungsoo put an arm around the other’s shoulders. Well tried to. He didn’t keep his arm there for long. The tall:short angle was just too awkward.

“You know what? That’s fine!” Jongin threw his arms in the air. “If she doesn’t want the sexy, intelligent, hot and totally amazing Kai, that’s fine with me!” He flung his arm out, narrowly missing his companion. “If she wants a unicorn and some tall guy with a creepy smile” he shuddered as if it were the world’s biggest blasphemy “then that’s fine with me.”

“That’s the spirit! Now how about some ice cream? Hyung’s treat?” Kyungsoo sighed inwardly with relief. The boy just need some time to mull over. All he needed to do was let it out. That wasn’t too bad.

A few weeks later, Kyungsoo walked into their room with some iced tea.

“Jongin-ah, I got you some--” Kyungsoo dropped the glass of tea and stared, eyes wide.

In their room, Jongin had taped a paper cone to his forehead and was wearing Chanyeol’s thick-framed glasses. He was staring intently at his computer, where he was editing pictures of himself in that get-up, smiling an impossibly huge grin.

It was at the moment that Kyungsoo realized that he will never understand kids.
