"Addy!"
"Gege! Over here!"
Kris ran, following the young girl's voice. The park was large, full of ancient trees that both scared and enchanted him. He paused, listening intently for the sound of Addy's running, the tinkle of her laugh. There. To the right. Kris took off towards the sound, determined to catch up. The promise he had made to their parents echoed in his head. Take care of Addy! You're the older one. You know how Addy is. She had protested, complaining that being one year younger didn't make that much of a difference, before she shot off into the park. 10 year-old Kris nodded firmly, promising that he would before he turned and followed his charge, leaving their parents at the picnic table. He and Addy had grown up together. He knew how she was.
"Addy! Where are you?" Kris had been chasing her through the trees for over twenty minutes, but he still had yet to spot her. Her laugh was close, very close. He rested a palm on a tree, pausing to take breath as he tried to gain his bearings. He couldn't pinpoint where exactly her voice was coming from, unless....
"Up here! Look up, silly!” He did, and he caught sight of the girl with a smile so bright that he could have sworn he stopped breathing. “Gotcha. Now climb up.” Addy patted the space next to her. She had found a particularly thick branch, strong enough to hold two children. As Kris got closer, she scooted over, giving him space to sit beside her.
She let him catch his breath. She liked playing these games of tag, loved knowing that no matter how far she ran, or where she runs to, he would come chasing after her. He was her Kris gege, always there for her when she needed him. Her parents might argue until her mother burst into tears. Her 'friends' might bully her until she had no where to hide. But Kris she can always depend on.
Addy watched as he adjusted himself on the branch. She could tell that he was uncomfortable being so high up, so she placed a hand on top of his in reassurance. There had been a reason she brought them up here.
“We’re pretty high up.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll hold you,” Addy teased. She tightened her hold on his hand.
“Are you calling me a scared-y cat?” She only giggled at how offended he looked before pointing in front of her, through the branches. She felt, more than heard, his breath catch. She watched his eyes grow wide, jaw drop in wonder. She turned to where he was looking, and felt her heart beat faster.
The tree branches framed the valley. They were cool in the shade of the leaves. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves, and as the leaves moved the world seemed to shimmer. The moving water of the lake sparkled among the heavy trees. The forest offered itself to them, as if to say there’s so much more for you to see.
He turned to look at his friend. The light moved and danced on her. He saw a small smile, a flit of the eye as she spied him looking at her, wisps of hair mixing with the breeze, a growing blush on her cheeks. He felt like he has never seen something more beautiful.
“Amazing, huh?” she whispered.
“Yeah,” he breathed, letting out a breath he didn’t know he was holding.
“Aren’t you glad you climbed up?”
“Yeah.”
“Is that all you’re going to say?”
“Yeah.”
They looked at each other, and burst out laughing. It was rare, to see the Serious and Older Kris laugh. His furrowed brows had always scared her bullies off. Even with their parents, he always looked thoughtful and solemn. It was ever more rare to catch Kris off guard, and it delighted Addy to know that she was able to surprise him. She had always felt that he was too serious to be ten.
All too soon, they heard their parents calling for them. They can faintly smell the barbequed meat, and Addy’s stomach grumbled. Kris moved off the branch quickly, giving Addy room to climb down. His eyes never left her. She was his to protect. He promised.
When Addy reached the last branch, Kris offered her his hand. She took it and jumped the last few feet down to the ground. “Ooof.”
“Are you okay?” Kris looked over her, checking her ankles.
“Yes. Let’s go before mom starts yelling.” They set out, back towards their parents, hand in hand. They didn’t speak. The magic of the moment hadn’t worn off, and both instinctively knew that the moment was special to the other.
Just before they left the cover of the trees, Addy stopped, pulling him back.
“Will you always chase after me?”
“Yeah.” She looked up and saw him smile. The warmth of his hand felt all too real, and for the first time she thought that maybe, just maybe, her friends were right, that she had a crush on Kris.
“Catch me if you can.” And she ran towards their parents, hoping that he didn’t see her blush.
Kris watched her, and then he ran.
Like every time before.
Like every time after.
This was such a spur of the moment thing ;u; It was actually going to be in Chinese, longer and with a different ending (almost impossible for me to do), but then I really wanted them on a tree, and so here we are. I hope you like it!
