When they told them Jino was going to be part of S.M. The Ballad, Kyungsoo's heart dropped.
Not that he wasn't happy for his friend. He was. Of all the trainees who were training as singers, Jino is one of the best. If there was anyone who deserved to sing with Kyuhyun, Jay and Jonghyun, it was him.
No, the reason why Kyungsoo's heart dropped was because he knew that, from that moment on, their dream of singing together - their shared dream - was about to shatter.
"How does it feel?" Kyungsoo asks, trying to keep his voice from shaking.
"It feels..." Jino took an unsteady breath, "It feels unreal. Like, it's finally, happening, you know?"
Kyungsoo nods, but he doesn't know. He wishes he knew. Soon, his best friend is going to be whisked away from him. He's seen it happen before. Ready-to-debut trainees disappear from practice and training, bouncing from one photoshoot to the next. The few times he sees some of them before their first stage, he notices that their voices were hoarse, weak from all the recording they have done. He knows that once Jino embarks on this journey there is no turning back. There will suddenly be an insurmountable wall between the two of them.
Is this how Jongin felt watching Taemin debut? He wondered.
"...Kyungsoo." A voice brought him back from this thoughts. "Kyungsoo. You'll cheer for me, right?" Kyungsoo blinked, eyes their signature size. He saw Jino leaning slightly towards him, face earnest and brows furrowed. Jino knew how much debuting together meant to his friend. With the sudden change of plans, he worried if Kyungsoo would retreat back into himself, like before they were friends.
Kyungsoo scoffed and grinned, knowing that the other was worried about him. "Pfft. You know those really big blinking fansigns those fangirls have?" Jino nods. "Well, I will make one with the biggest, brightest pink hearts for you, bring your mom to your first stage and scream like an idiot just to embarrass you." Kyungsoo chuckled and lightly punched his friends shoulder. "Of course I'll cheer for you. A friend who doesn't support another friend's dream isn't a good friend at all."
Jino burst out laughing, imagining Kyungsoo and his mother doing exactly what he described. "You're the best."
The two friends shared a smile and a gentle fist bump. Wall or no wall, they're best friends for a reason.

Two years later, it was Jino who was holding up an embarrassingly large fansign, with "KYUNGSOO IS MY BOO <3 <3" flashing the most obnoxious shade of yellow.
He stood front and centre (it helped that he was an SM artist) at EXO's debut showcase. There was a slight pang in his heart as he watched all 12 members walk onstage. A part of him knew that, if things hadn't gone the way they did, he would be up there too. S.M. The Ballad was just a project, something to get him warmed up. He was one of the many trainees in the roster for M1 and M2.
But that's just it. He was one of many. The twelve on stage? They were twelve of many too.
He remembers something Kyungsoo said to him back when he was preparing for his own debut.
A friend who doesn't support another friend's dream isn't a good friend at all.
He took a deep breath and continued to cheer for them, waving his sign wildly. Hyoyeon and Sooyung teased him, but he didn't care because, right at that moment, he caught Kyungsoo's eye. The younger had the biggest grin on his face, but Jino knew from looking at his clenched hands that he was nervous. He waved his sign harder, and cheered louder, because he couldn't be more proud of Kyungsoo than right at this moment.
Kyungsoo was living his dream. The proof was right in front of him. Jino will soon be re-living his dream too. Kyungsoo had supported him the whole time - the preparations, the first stage, the last stage, the limbo. Now it's Jino's turn to support his friend every step of the way.

After the showcase, back in their dorms, Kyungsoo checked his phone. He got a few missed calls from his mother and made a mental note to call her after a shower. He quickly scrolled through his text messages, knowing that the sooner he was cleaned up and in bed, the sooner he would be able to sleep and rest before the flight to Beijing.
He stopped when he got to Jino's message.
You were great today, Kyungsoo. I'm proud of you. Don't forget we still have a duet stage, now that you're a bigshot! Haha just kidding. You'll always be baby Soo to me. Have a safe flight to China and call me when you get home.
Kyungsoo grinned at his phone and quickly typed out a reply.
You're gonna regret calling me a baby. I'll set my fangirls on you.
