heroes15 Cold

Gabriel was probably one of the few people who in the world who saw the common cold as a good thing. It wasn’t that he enjoyed being sick, or anything even close to that; but the first cold of the season always meant something special to him. The first cold of the season signaled falls arrival for him, and after fall always came winter.

Before he had even been given the chance to recover from his sneeze he felt himself being pulled on; and being slightly off balance he stumbled, and was unable to stop himself from being pulled into a room.

“Dammit, Gabriel! What the hell is wrong with you? Are you trying to kill the whole damned crew?!”

It took Gabriel a moment to realize who was speaking as his mind always slowed slightly when he was sick, but once he had he turned towards the voice and frowned slightly. “What? Of course I’m not! What the hell are you talking about, Dr.McCoy?”

The other man opened his mouth to answer, but before he could reply Gabriel sneezed again, and that made him flail his arms.

“That! That is what I mean! What’s wrong with you?” he demanded, and Gabriel was pretty sure that if the other hadn’t thought that it could be contagious an lethal, he would have him pressed up against the wall while yelling at him.

“It’s…just the common cold. I always get it at the beginning of fall. It’s no big deal,” Gabriel replied in a slightly hesitant voice, the frown still in place on his face.

“Common!? Common for you, maybe! But this is an illness of the past! It could kill us all!” Bones replied, and though Gabriel was still slightly confused, there was also vague amusement on his face, because he was beginning to see what Jim had meant when he told him that the good doctor would sometimes get crazy eyes. “Dammit, Gabriel! This is not a laughing matter!”

“What? I’m not laughing! Of course… It’s very serious. Very very very serious,” Gabriel nodded as he pressed his lips together, trying to wipe all amusement off his face, though that didn’t go very well. “I’ll just go home for a few days and rest, okay?”

“No!” The reply was snapped, and it made the frown return to Gabriel’s face. The other didn’t seem to have anything more to add to that either, and he just watched him as he scurried around the room for a long moment. “Sit down.”

“Sit down?” Gabriel asked, but sat down nonetheless. He couldn’t help but start to worry about just what he was doing, and going to do; and raised a brow as he continued to watch him. “But…I don’t want to get you sick.”

“No, but if you go out, you risk contaminating the whole damn ship, and that’s not something that I have the time to deal with,” he grumbled, and then came towards him; something that made Gabriel cower ever so slightly, despite it not being the most intimidating of walks. “But you. You I can take care of. In truth, you’re really very lucky you have me.”

“How exactly am I lu…” he started, but the word was cut short by a loud yelp of pain. “God dammit!”

“You and Jim are both infants!” Bones snapped again at him as he brought a hand up to rub his neck. There was a slight scowl on his face at the same time as his lip was sticking out ever so slightly. “Oh, don’t you dare try to pout, that isn’t going to work on me. I’m a doctor, not your mother.”

If the other man hadn’t been scowling at him the way he was, Gabriel might have made a comment to the last statement, but his mouth stayed firmly closed as he continued to rub his neck.

“Now what?”

“Now what? Now what?! Now you’re fine! Healed! And all thanks to me! If you were going to have an allergic reaction, symptoms would have presented themselves by now, but thankfully it doesn’t seem as though that’s going to happen,” he grumbled at him as he moved around the room. “You can get me a bottle of whiskey as a thank you gift. Now get.”

“Uhm, right,” Gabriel replied meekly as he got up; still rubbing at his neck as he walked to the door, despite it not really hurting anymore. “Thank you, doctor.”

“Mhm, damn right you are. Not that I could have not done anything. I wouldn’t want you infecting Jim; Lord knows he’d be allergic to that too,” he said, still scowling, and that made Gabriel turn to give him a questioning look.

“Jim? What about the rest of the crew?” he asked, though all he got in reply was a pointed look, the type that said I know everything, don’t even try me, boy. Therefore, instead of pressing the issue Gabriel just smiled at him before disappearing out the door, ready to find Jim; because this time it was his turn to whine about hypoabuse.
