Wow, that's really interesting. When we played the game (admittedly just that once) we made the same choice, though yeah, I wondered what sort of effect it had.
You can find tons of other theories for why it does that if you hunt around, but even after reading a bunch of them this is one time when I still think my first impression makes the most sense, given everything we're actually told about how the god works.
It's even one of the only plot-heavy games in the world where I can say that it's okay to rent it if you don't want to spend the cash to buy it, because it's short enough to finish a full playthrough of within a rental period (unless you're like me and need to keep setting survival horror games aside for ages to calm yourself down during your first time playing them) without rushing straight through it.
I don't usually have the attention span to play a game in the time a rental'd give me. But I am going into town later today, and am going to swing by Walmart and see if they have it in their bargin bin. I can't afford to buy a full-price game, but SH4 is already $19.99, so here's hoping this one will be, too.
