Character Info
Character Name: Madison Paige
Character’s Age: 27
Fandom: Heavy Rain
Timeline: At the end of The Old Warehouse, after helping Ethan and Norman Jayden save Shaun from the Origami Killer.
Appearance: Madison stands at about 5'7, with short brown hair that brushes her high cheekbones. She has brown eyes that often bear dark circles underneath them thanks to her chronic insomnia, and pink-tinged skin bordering on the pale during the rainier months. She keeps herself in good shape, with a decently fit physique and some muscle definition that speaks to at least a little self-defense training.
History: Her wiki paige.

At first, Madison appears to be just a young woman suffering from insomnia who can only sleep by renting a room at a motel, meeting the game's protagonist, Ethan Mars, in a said motel by chance. She finds him injured after the first trial he completed to save his son from the Origami Killer, and helps him out of good samaritanship. He tries to warn her off, and she agrees not to get involved, however when she finds him wounded a second time hours later, she can't help but pry.

Eventually it comes out that he is the man on the news suspected of being the Origami Killer, whose son is the latest victim. But Madison believes him when he says he only wants to save him, and tells him she'll help him - no matter what. They end up sleeping together (if the player decides to pick that option) and afterward, Ethan finds Madison's notebook - in which she has written extensive details about the case. She's a reporter.

Initially furious, Ethan is mollified when Madison tells him that her interest in him was, at first, due to his involvement with the Origami Killer case, but she ended up helping him only out of true concern.

She mentions having grown up with brothers who she has 'played nurse' to after they got in fights, which enables her to help patch up Ethan after his trials. She also refers to an incident in her past that led to her insomnia - it's only revealed in behind-the-scenes information that she was a reporter during the Iraq war where she must have seen some very terrible things.

Aside from that, Madison is an open book. So to speak.
Personality: A troubled soul, Madison Paige has nevertheless weathered the trials and tribulations of her life alone, for the most part. She is independent to a fault, sometimes to the point of reckless stupidity, and has often survived the odd life-threatening situation by sheer dumb luck. But she's not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, so to speak.

Growing up with older brothers goes some way to explaining her tough nature. She doesn't like to show weakness or admit defeat, although she has a fiercely protective streak, along with a compassionate side that has often gotten her into trouble quite aside from her boldness. She's used to taking care of people rather than being taken care of, even if that means putting herself and her needs aside for a while.

Inquisitiveness has always been a defining trait for her; she'll pursue a thread of questioning to its end, even if it gets her into danger, trusting her instincts to get her out of it. She isn't above fear, though - she feels it quite acutely - but she's one of those people that operates best under pressure, with adrenaline flowing through her veins. It's when she's at rest that Madison has the hardest time coping.

Insomnia has plagued Madison since her stint as an on-location reporter during the Iraq War. She saw things no one should have ever had to see, in the thick of battle, and they plague her to this day. She seeks peace in motel rooms, places away from home, where she feels the most threatened. She has always operated best out of her element, which is perhaps why she decided to become a journalist in the first place.

After Iraq she leaned more towards the photographic side of journalism, although she never lost her investigative instinct. Photographing furniture was never as challenging as immersing herself in an intricate and fascinating case.

Although she has a tendency to jump in headfirst without thinking, Madison is usually smart enough to prepare backup, just in case. Usually. She has been known to make mistakes, to misjudge people, but for the most part she trusts her instincts and that has gotten her through life reasonably unscathed.

She has a soft spot for the underdog, the person struggling against all odds, because she's often felt like that herself. Her insomnia was never treated very seriously by doctors, but part of that is due to Madison's stubbornness and determination to deal with it herself. She'd rather do that than get help most of the time. Another throwback from having older brothers - growing up with someone always there to come to her rescue, she defiantly leaned the other way and became more independent, eschewing her brothers' help when she could and helping them instead.

In the end, it's herself that Madison turns to for reassurance and security, and if she can't find it there, well...she'll go out of her way to fix that. Learning to trust or rely on other people has never been easy for her, but the few people she does let in will find in her a fiercely loyal bulldog of a friend who won't easily let go of anything.

Powers/Abilities: While not proficient or skilled in hand-to-hand combat, Madison is reasonably fit and good at defending herself. She also possesses a keen investigative edge, and she isn't afraid to ask questions (if that counts as an ability). She has some first aid experience, and she can also ride a motorcycle like a boss.
Limitations: Since Madison's abilities are reasonably mundane, they shouldn't need any limiting. She won't be arriving with her motorcycle from the canon point I've chosen, either.
Writing Samples
Third Person Sample: Madison used to like the sound of the rain.

It was comforting; the continual pitter-patter of raindrops as they fell. It wasn't always predictable, though. Sometimes it was a light shower, sometimes a downpour, but in the wetter seasons in Philadelphia, the rain was a constant companion, something you could always rely upon.

She never thought she'd end up resenting that fact.

But it was over now. Ethan and his son, reunited, the rain outside no longer a threat, a comforting sound now as it fell on the warehouse's metal roof. They were all cold, cold and sore and exhausted, and outside there were police with guns and a warrant for Ethan's arrest, but outside there was Agent Jayden too and Madison could only hoped he'd dealt with the Origami Killer. Dealt with Scott Shelby.

She'd have fresh nightmares about the look in his eyes when she'd walked straight into him and his gun in his apartment. But she tried not to think about that now as she, Ethan and his son walked out together, and when the cops saw them - Thank God - they didn't fire.

It was over. They had all made it, and it was over.

They walked towards the police cars and flashing lights and safety. Miraculously, Madison felt tired. Not just physically exhausted - she'd felt like that for a long time - but tired. Like she could put her head down and sleep for a week. Like she could sleep.

She'd missed this feeling.

She only let her eyes drift shut for a second, but that was all it took. She stumbled, stepping heavily in a puddle that splashed all the way up her already-soaked jeans let, and fell to the ground, catching herself on palm and knee. And when she opened her eyes, the flashing lights were gone and so were the police cars and so was Ethan and Shaun.

"Ethan?" Confused, cold and wet, Madison raised her head and looked around in confusion. She wasn't outside the warehouse anymore. She was in the middle of a street, a dark and rainy street on top of a slight rise in the terrain, and she could see from where she was that the bottom of the street was flooded and while she was standing in two inches of water, there was a good deal more out there.

"Ethan!" Madison pushed herself to her feet, already feeling the adrenaline gearing up in her system, chasing away the tiredness. She span around. No Ethan, no nobody. "Ethan!"

What the hell happened? Don't panic, girl, there has to be an explanation for this. Don't panic...

She wrapped her arms around herself and shivered fitfully. It's okay, girl. It's gonna be okay. He's safe. Whatever's happened, he's safe. But the thought didn't calm her, because she wasn't sure if even she believed it now.

First Person Sample: [Phone call, all]

Hello? Is this thing working? Is anybody out there? I-

My name is Madison Paige. I'm a photographer. I don't know how I got here or why, but I'm - I'm looking for someone. His name is Ethan Mars. He has a son, Shaun, he's about ten and I- [A pause while she takes a deep breath to compose herself. It works, to a point.] I was with them just before I found myself...here.

I tried a few doors and nobody answered, but this one was unlocked and I found this phone and this letter. 'Bell Pointe'? I've never even heard of the place. Am I still in Pennsylvania? Feels like it, if this weather's anything to go by.

[She sighs.] And here I was sure it was finally over...
