1 Corinthians 14

Feb 27, 2007 11:25

"As in all the churches of the saints, 34 the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says. 35 If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church."

What do you make of that?

that could be similar to the thing about women keeping their hair covered

culturally at the time, if your hair was uncovered it meant you were a prostitute.

culturally in the early church men and women were separated. the men worshiped in a different room than the women.

then as it got more toward the medieval era, they would be in the same room, but on different sides of the room...

during the medieval period, it became ok for everyone to talk in church, because for one, church was daily, for two, church was the social hub of the cities...

but during the time when Christianity first emerged, it was a time of strict judaism...

idk, though. i could be wrong.

i should go ask my husband.

I don't know how much of that to accept, though it did sound like a pretty good explanation. Where do you make the distinction between cultural preference and law?

Yes, you should probably ask your husband...except we're not in church.
...Or are we?
Does that mean "church" - the building we worship in on sunday morning, or "church" - the body of believers? Because if it's the second definition, you women have got a LOT of silence to make up for the last 2000 years. Hahahahahaha, oh man. Funny.
But seriously, how do you make the distinction?
