Overheard at the office

A co-worker is going to see a theatrical production of The Screwtape Letters, and a discussion of his trip prompted this exchange:

"Do you know CS Lewis at all?"

"No, not really."

"He's probably one of the top 30 most-read authors."

"Oh, okay."

"He's up there with, uh, that Lord of the Rings guy."

Not terrible, but not amazing. A little melodramatic. Which is disappointing, because Screwtape is one of my maybe two or three favorite books ever. (Maybe I judge it too harshly because of that.)

That's too bad. I really liked the book, and I could see it adapted well.

What are the other one or two favorite books?

Someone mentioned The Chronicles of Narnia, and the person who didn't know who CS Lewis is said "okay" in the sense of "I've heard of that pop culture reference" but without any significant recognition. It was freaky, how far outside this kid's world CS Lewis is.
