Summary: Jared Padalecki’s closest friend is Jensen, a hybrid doll he rescued as a child. As they grow up, Jensen takes on the role of tutor and mentor, preparing Jared for the arduous task of entering a prestigious tech in order to continue his father’s tremendous legacy. But the greatest lesson is one that can only be learned, not taught, as Jared realizes that just because a creature isn't made of flesh and blood does not mean it can't have a soul.

This story was partially inspired by Hybrid Child by Shungiku Nakamura. The manga was one of those works that transcended whatever category it's been cubbyholed into, and was recognized as one of the loveliest if also one of the best in the genre. Of course, Three Grams also echoed Herbert’s Dune and a dash of Philip K. Dick just because of the subject matter.
However, it was only when I finished that I realized what Three Grams was really based on: Margery Williams’ immortal Velveteen Rabbit. Except, in this story, the former velveteen rabbit returned to his boy. Forever, in case any of you are wondering.
The quote is by George Eliot, something that I stumbled over a long time ago, and has stayed with me since.
All the artwork is by felixmackey, for which I am eternally grateful since I can barely crop a photo properly. Believe it or not, all the bloody thumbprints on the box for the story header was layered! Ain't that just cool?
Of course, a big thank-you to the mods of spn_j2_bigbang for handling what has to be one of the biggest and logistically difficult comms in the fandom. Seriously, can you imagine spending the summer SPN-free and without bigbang to tide you over?
