I love you too, Apple.

So I just got a brand new, 32G iPod Touch for Christmas! Yay!

No.

I turn it on- "Enter Passcode"
Um, I don't HAVE a passcode. I never set one. I just got it.
Look around on the support site, find some stuff. "Oh okay, dunno why it's doing this but I just have to reset it."
iTunes: "iPhone detected blah blah download new software blah blah"
Um...it's not an iPhone. But whatever. *download*
*sit there 15 minutes*
iTunes: "Software not compatible"
Well no shit Sherlock, it's not an iPhone.
*search around the support forums more*
Okay okay, need the newest version of iTunes. I thought I tried that and it didn't work on this computer, but whatever...oh! Nope, it says Mac OS X 1.4 or higher needed! It'll work.
*downloads*
*clicks install* "Mac OS X 10.5 or higher needed"
RAGE.
*look around forums some more*
Alright, this guy flat-out said "You need at least 10.5 or you're screwed." Fine then, I understand them wanting people to buy their new software. Guess I'll just ask dad if we can buy the new one.
"Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard- $30"
Eh, okay. But wait, only runs on Intel-based computers? Well damn, ours is PPC or whatever the not-Intel thing is. That's a no-go...
Okay then, guess we're getting 10.5. *searches* It's not...here? I guess you can't buy it anymore? Maybe since it's old and obsolete you can get it for free! ...nope... Let's look on Ebay! ...$150? NO I DON'T THINK SO.

At this point, I am rather frustrated. No, that's probably an understatement.

Well, what are my options at this point...? *searches help forum MORE* Oh look! This looks like someone in the exact same situation...*reads*
INSERT EXTREME RAGE HERE.
10 pages. Of people who have this same problem. And cannot do a damn thing about it.
If you have a generation 4 iPod/iPhone, you need iTunes 10. To get iTunes 10, you need OS X 10.5 or 10.6. If your computer isn't Intel-based, 10.6 won't work. You need 10.5. THERE IS NO REASONABLE AND/OR LEGAL WAY TO OBTAIN 10.5.

Now, I understand that old software has to become obsolete. Why else would people buy their new ones? I would be more then happy to buy an upgrade right now. But guess what? I. CAN'T. You are literally giving me no option.
To make this more ridiculous? From what I gather, iTunes 10 is compatible with really old Windows systems. And they won't make it work with their own products? The problem has been pointed out since September. Nothing. All the questions on the forum mentioning it have no answer. They're not even trying. What the hell Apple. What the hell.

SO. I've been working on this 3 or 4 hours now, attempting to make my iPod NOT a useless piece of junk. I'm kind of proud of myself for figuring out the root of the problem like this. But when the only answer to said problem is "lol you're screwed C:" that is not cool. Not at all.
I put iTunes on the laptop (because they make sure it works on Windows!) and got the right software at least. So now the passcode thingy is gone and I can at least see the home screen. It's such a nice screen...
Tried plugging it back into the Mac now, but it just tells me to get iTunes 10. I WOULD LOVE TO. Grrr...
So now I guess I'm buying some software to move files from an iPod TO a computer, so I can use my old one to move my music onto the laptop...
I don't even LIKE this damn laptop. God. But I'm not getting my own until my birthday at least, in March. THEN I GET TO MOVE EVERYTHING /AGAIN/.
*headdesk*

This is just...way too much anger and frustration for Christmas. THIS SHOULD NOT BE THIS DIFFICULT. It's pissing me off. You don't even.

Yeah yeah, I know. "THIS IS WHY I HATE MACS." Don't even say it.

rant, raeg
