The first thing he noticed about her was how easy smiles came to her, seemingly without any effort or conscious thought. The second thing was the look like cutting glass glittering under the surface while she did so.

He had seen many a beauty in his years and surely some that surpassed her appeals by far, but somehow that silly little thing with her pale eyes and red hair captured his fancy, where all the others failed.

He had spotted her in the procession to the temple while he actually should have searched the vampire hiding in the mass of people, one single amassment of warm blood and enticing smell. She had stood right at the front, too near to the king to have no connection to him, a splash of color between the   ever-same black. He watched her inconspicuously ditching unpleasant approaches, while mingling in the crowd, enfolded as if in a dance to which only she knew the steps.

The vampire escaped that day and he cursed his foolish notion of giving a human so much attention, but in his never-closing eyes the image of the freezing glint in her eyes was caught, not to break free again.

After that he came back many times to gaze upon her, unworthy creature that she was. He wasn’t naïve enough to think this sentiment a sign of love. He had seen that on his brother too many times before to be so foolish, but from time to time he became more certain in the knowledge that he had to have her.

No it was no love, it was desire, a notion far more understandable than the mad feeling singers called love and he called stupidity.

With that thought in mind Caius ignored Aro’s knowing smirk whenever he touched him henceforth.
