Brief EDIT to Personality:

I want to correct the fact that Peeta spends more nights than not screaming and yelling. He, in fact, does not scream or yell or do anything physically disruptive at night. He still has nightmares, they’re still terrifying, but he doesn’t lash out at night, he is just -- well, terrified.

During hijacking, Peeta probably suffered immense trauma. After the first few injections, I believe that regardless of any attempted conditioning, the venom did what it does best: seeking and exposing fear. He witnessed the death of his father, his mother and Katniss repeatedly. As the hijacking process continued, each memory of Katniss became horrendous. An inexplicable terror was triggered each time he saw her on the video screens and slowly the doctors began to spin a new set of memories for him
