The last week has been snowy and icy, as I mentioned previously. What we didn't expect was to be literally buried in snow, in the manner commonly practiced via sand at warm, temperate beaches. Things started to melt a few days ago, and for a night we were actually able to drive around, but then a new and fully upgraded Arctic storm arrived the ( Read more... )

You know, if you want, you can send me your cover letter and resume and I can give you some feedback on it. I've done a fair bit of hiring in my time. :-)

I may take you up on that. :)

I think a lot of it has to do with the economic circumstances and my own experience level - I'm really dying to break into some kind of entry-level programming job because programming is something I really enjoy, but I've never had one, and a lack of a CS degree on top of that probably turns a lot of prospective employers off. Of course, I can talk all I want about the various languages I've used and interesting projects I've worked on, but it's tough to get people's attention when you know there's like 30 other guys applying to the same job with more obvious qualifications.

Well, if you know any Perl, you're free to apply for this, too:

We have a training program that basically just goes on forever until you're ready. (Training program is unpaid, though.)

Well...I guess I might have over-exaggerated a bit. A better way of putting it is that I've had miserable luck trying to get my foot in the door in the tech industry, so really it's a matter of failing to land interviews for the type of work I would prefer to be doing. I imagine I could probably land a retail job if I had to, and I feel slightly guilty for having much of an issue with it (especially in such a retail-heavy city as Portland), but at the same time I feel pretty strongly about trying to find something where I can apply the skills I do have. Certain fields have been more receptive - particularly education-related things, which makes sense given what I've been doing for a paycheck the last few years. Anything is better than starving, of course, and I'm OK with that, but part of me refuses to believe that I can't convince some hiring manager out there that an innovative digital artist with practical programming chops would be an asset. I think that if this were 2000 and we were at the height of the internet bubble, ( ... )
