- So many fanon things (guesses, whatever) in the book, I kept going, "Didn't I read this somewhere... online?" Like: Voldemort personally tempting Ron to the dark side by playing up his always second best insecurities, the whole R.A.B. thing (KREACHER ILU), Neville turning out to be the better (although recognizing that Harry's the more traumatized) of the two potential Boys Who Lived, Mundungus Fletcher being the thief of the R.A.B. locket, Narcissa secretly being the balls behind the Malfoy machinations.
Yeah, I have to admit that so much of it seemed to read like a (bad) fanfic, but I guess that's inevitable in such a big fandom -- someone is going to get it right at least once. I had much the same feeling about Lily/Snape, it seemed like such a fanon thing, even though I recognize that JKR is hardly cribbing from the fans! Still, I think that was what disappointed me most overall about the book (and the epilogue, too, of course ( ... )

I'm pretty easy to please, and yes, the HP fandom has thought of almost everything, but... ugh. I accept that Snape is often creepy and obsessive and it is now canon that his relationship with Lily kind of falls into that category. But that doesn't mean I'm going to like it, or lose my knee-jerk reaction to those Snape/Lily fics that tend to be disgustingly sweet and unrealistic.

I was glad that, as I feared after reading HBP, the whole book did not center on "Harry finds a Horcrux. Harry destroys a Horcrux!" so that bit went better than I thought.Yeah, I'm not a big fan of "Collect all the missing relics and win the safety of the universe/immortality/true love/etc" as a straightforward device either, so it was a nice change. That said, in the scene where Ron pulls Harry out of the lake, there's no mention of drying spells for Ron, who has to be almost as cold as Harry (although ( ... )
