Booksfree.com. Like Netflix, but for books. Apparently you pay $8/month to get books, including audiobooks, in the mail. Read, return, get more books.

Arguably this is something that's done completely free by your local library, but if your local library sucks and/or isn't easy to get to, this is possibly a nice alternative ( Read more... )

I've already signed up for it. So far it works fine, but it's slow--they use Media Mail. I sent back my first two books about five days ago and haven't gotten the next two yet.

My local public library is a pain--brief/odd hours, no after-hours drop for books. I just don't have the time to use it. Given that, I think this booksfree thing is a great idea and it saves me a bundle in purchasing books.

Same as with netflix, I figure if I have the monthly service, I shouldn't be buying a lot (I of course still buy the rare DVD set or book).

Just don't be expecting netflix speediness.

The local libraries for me used to suck hardcore, so I'd definitely have used something like this over slogging down to one of the branches just to take advantage of interlibrary loan. For all the fuss and bother $8/month would've been a more than fair trade off, esp to get the books sent right to my house.
