Frugal cooking?

Since those of us in the colder regions are looking at a winter of very high heating bills, my family is looking at ways to cut our budget. One way to do so without enormous changes to our lifestyle is via our grocery bill, so I'm hoping maybe we can have a thread here with different ideas (including recipes or not) of meals that are fairly ( Read more... )

For me, it was worth investing in a pressure cooker to do the dry beans. You still soak overnight, but the cooking time is cut way down. The biggest beans get cooked for about 15 minutes and then it's off the heat. They need to cool naturally in the pot - about 30 minutes, but you aren't doing anything at that point.

It's also a great way to cook heartier grains like barley.

I love bean recipes. My favorite bean recipe book is the Brilliant Bean. It's out of print but I am pretty sure you can find it at used bookstores. I have a lovely lentil soup recipe that can be modified lots of ways. It's not from the Brilliant bean - I got it from fast vegetarian feasts. I am putting it here cuz it's so yummy and CHEAP (without the meat ( ... )
