So, I'm a little pissed off right now and since this is a community for support, I thought that I'd post my plight here.
Background: I am in a living situation right now that is really expensive and hard to keep up with. I share an apartment with two other girls and we split the expenses and groceries each week. One of the girls hasn't been around much, so she isn't the issue. The other girl has invited some of her friends to partake in our sharing of the cooking duties for the month of January when we have no classes. This is fine with me. Each week I do the shopping since I'm the most frugal and I find the best deals. Sometimes I get aggravated when I'm the only one there when I get back and I have to put all of the food away myself. But, you know, I've learned to live with that. Mostly.
The Situation: This evening I went out to shop to supplement the groceries I bought on Wednesday. We had been gone for the holidays and that one trip didn't take us through the week. The two girls that agreed to help with the cooking (and chipping in money for the groceries) gave me a list of things to pick up. Well, I went to the store, got the groceries I could and came back. Granted, I only had an hour to shop since I have other appointments to keep tonight. There were two items on their lists that I did not pick up. The first was a rump or tenderloin beef (approximately .5lbs). Why did I not pick this up? It wasn't at the meat counter. There was a rump ROAST there, but that was $13.00. No way was I spending that much on meat we would only end up wasting most of. The other item on the list was "chicken (1.5lbs) + 8 chicken breasts". Well, I got two packages of boneless, skinless chicken breasts (about 6 breasts all together) because they were at a really good price. I had no clue what other kind of chicken she wanted AND split chicken breasts would have cost a fortune. So, I didn't pick those up. I did pick up about six pounds of ground beef for their buy one, get one free sale.
I took the groceries back to the apartment. They looked at me with astonishment that I hadn't picked up those pieces of meat. I told them that the meat counter didn't have a very good selection and the prices on the chicken breasts were exorbitant. Apparently that wasn't a good enough explanation for them because they got this sort of bewildered look on their faces. My apartment-mate told them to "be careful" because she knows how I operate. If it isn't on sale or at a reasonable price - I don't buy it. I can't AFFORD to just spend $25 in chicken breasts.
I would just really appreciate it if they ordered their meals around what I buy and the sales - not whatever they are in the mood for. I hate being the bottleneck when it comes to spending money, but they have to learn to scale back their culinary urges.
I'm very sorry for just rambling on about that, but it really pissed me off this afternoon. And venting about it here really sort of helped in a purging sort of way. Does anyone have any advice about living amongst people who don't have to be as frugal as we?
