this whole not-having-a-job or any source of income is really fucking depressing. I can't even get temp agencies to respond to my contact attempts. or fucking coffee shops. i feel like a ghost or something. I don't even know what to say in my cover letters and emails anymore. nothing I've said so far has been successful and this is month 3 already

I know how you feel. When I graduated it was terrible, I sent out literally thousands of resumes and got no word from anyone. But I just kept plugging away and eventually got a job that got me to my next and my next, etc. It'll work, you just gotta be strong!

i feel like writing cover letters is so time consuming, and I need to be quicker at getting my stuff out there. did you just send you resume without a cover letter, or just send a generic cover letter or something?

Yeah I just had a generic cover letter. Here's what I sent out:

Hello!

Please accept my application for your open position. My previous design experience ranges from national publications like PiQ Magazine and Newtype USA Magazine to designing a line of comic book covers for ADV Manga. I also have writing and editing experience from those publications, and have written for Connect Savannah, The Savannah Morning News and The Stanford Daily.

May I arrange an interview to further discuss my qualifications and share my portfolio with you? I know that I can succeed in this position if given the chance, and am extremely enthusiastic about the opportunity. Thank you for your time and consideration!

Sincerely,
Scott Howard

it's the worst when you think you are exactly qualified for a job too :(

it is rather starting to seem that the only way to get a job, almost, is to have a personal connection.

sometimes weird stuff happens though, like... one of my classmates emailed Oliver Herring, asking to work for him, and now he's an intern working for Herring 3 days a week in Nyc...!

I have been assuming that if I simply have my things where people can see them, they will come to me if they want more of it. letting them do the work for me, so I can get away with little or no self-promotion...? hmm.
