perfection is boring
Sungyeol would definitely, and guiltily, skip lunch on Thursdays. He’d pretend to walk towards the hall leading to the modern arts’ classrooms perfunctorily and he’d pretend to check his texts once he reached a certain room. He didn’t really had to pretend, there would always be, definitely more than 10 but less than a hundred, students peeking into the room and pressing their ears at the door (and some stupid enough to press their ears at the cement wall). Despite the crowded area and the murmuring hallway, he would close his eyes and (although soft) his ears would pick up the melody of the guitar and the voice that’s escaping from the not-completely-soundproof room.
And while all the girls are fawning and guys being covetous over the desirable pianist, Sungyeol would smile to himself because ‘too bad he’s taken’.
Every Friday, Sungyeol would go home late because he’d be too busy getting his lips bitten and abused by a certain pianist with beautiful, dazzling features. “Are you rushing home today?” he’d ask between pants for air and gasps for a need of touch. Sungyeol lets himself calm his thundering heart before he nuzzles into the crook of his neck, “Myungsoo, don’t ask the same question every week. Forever free on Fridays”
Myungsoo lets out an airy laugh when he lifts Sungyeol up on the table effortlessly and he bites on the boy’s ear. It sends a satisfying shiver down Sungyeol’s spinal. Between gasps for breath and biting swollen lips, Sungyeol sees it, the reflection of himself. His ugly, red and disgusting features next to a beautiful, blushing and flawless face. Before he knows it, he dashes out of the room in embarrassment, leaving Myungsoo confused.
“You’re not skipping lunch?” Woohyun asks over sandwiches and warm milk (and probably a whole lot of useless snacks).
“Mm” Sungyeol shakes his head and gulps down his orange juice perfunctorily.
Although the cafeteria has layers of voices and music overlapping each other, Sungyeol’s ears pick up Myungsoo’s voice probably about a few meters away. He stuffs the remaining rice left on his plate into his mouth (“Hey, you’ll choke to death if you eat like that!” Woohyun warns but it falls on deaf ears) and gives Woohyun a quick bye and ‘I’ll see you later’ before dashing off to god knows where.
“Where’s Sungyeol?” comes Myungsoo exactly a minute later.
Woohyun blinks, “Did you guys fight or something?”
Myungsoo raises an eyebrow, “Does it look like we fought?”
The boy decides to not answer the question as he indulges in his bread, Myungsoo is left confused.
It’s really irritating when Sungyeol sees Myungsoo teach some new kid the piano, because that was his place. “He’s found a new guy” Sunggyu says over books and stacks of homework, Sungyeol only mutters back ‘I know’ as he buries his face into papers, documents, projects and music notes. “That boy is beautiful,” he finally replies, about an hour later. Woohyun sneaks a glance at Sunggyu, in which the older boy raises an eyebrow and they asks simultaneously, “And your point?”
Sungyeol rolls his eyes, “Never mind. It’s a girl thing”
You’re a guy, but Woohyun and Sunggyu decide to keep it to themselves as they continue their assignments. “Woohyun” Sungyeol says, after the next hour, in which Woohyun replies by looking up from his papers. “How do I look right now?” He asks softly, to the point Woohyun lip-reads Sungyeol.
“Normal. Two eyes, one nose, one mouth and a pair of ears”
Sungyeol rolls his eyes, it’s a mistake to ask Woohyun after all.
Woohyun nudges Sunggyu and passes him a note that read ‘Self-conscious?’. Sunggyu gulps down the urge to giggle and only nods in reply. Sungyeol, oh Sungyeol.
“Sungyeol” Myungsoo finally catches him at lunch, after a week of being avoided. Sungyeol thinks about running away, but he remembers that Myungsoo has fast feet, he decides against it. “Oh, uh, hey” is his awkward reply. “Lunch, together?” Myungsoo offers and two words is all it takes to have Sungyeol grin from ear to ear with a stupid nod.
But apparently, ‘together’ meant Myungsoo, Sungyeol and Sungjong. Not, Myungsoo and Sungyeol.
“Sungyeol!” Myungsoo runs across the hallway in a flash and grips Sungyeol by the shoulder as class ends, “Are you, avoiding me?”. Sungyeol tries not to flinch (he does. Myungsoo probably saw it and decides to not say anything about it) and before he answers, there comes a skipping stick man across the hallway, with a beautiful smile and a beautiful face. “Hyung! Let’s go for a snack!” Sungjong grins and jumps up and down as to convince Myungsoo.
“Sure thing” Myungsoo shrugs and follows the skipping Sungjong out of school, pulling Sungyeol’s hands along and Sungyeol can’t seem to find the proper words to reject the trio-date or the proper actions to pull away from Myungsoo. It’s a curse, he thinks, it’s the Myungsoo-curse.
Sungyeol doesn’t know whether to smile or to frown when he’s seated beside Myungsoo and when his fingers are against his. Sungjong doesn’t know this, of course. “Hyung! It’s your treat, alright?” Sungjong chirps and Sungyeol almost flinches. Myungsoo remains calm (he is forever calm) and he smiles, “Of course. Anything for you”
Anything for you, that was a line he used for him. For Sungyeol.
“So Sungyeol” Myungsoo turns to the boy, his head resting on his palm, “You haven’t answered my question”. Sungyeol sighs and Sungjong starts his long lines of ‘what are you guys talking about’. It is only after the food, drinks and dessert when Sungyeol answers ‘yes’ and leaves the expensive-looking cafe without waiting for Myungsoo to pay.
He doesn’t deserve being in such a beautiful place with beautiful people in it.
Sungyeol avoids Myungsoo for the next couple of weeks, but Myungsoo doesn’t really try to find him. “He gave up on me” Sungyeol whines to Woohyun. “Sungyeol” Woohyun puts down his glass of apple juice, “You’ve said that three times today”. He knows that Woohyun is fed up (and probably would like to smash the plate of sandwich on his head). “You’re like a girl” Woohyun mutters and Sungyeol has to agree.
He’s like a girl for feeling self-conscious about his looks.
But Myungsoo’s to blame for being so damned gorgeous.
It’s the 31st day of ignoring and avoiding Myungsoo when he grabs him by the fingers and drags him into the piano room. He slams the door shut and slams his lips on his (and he has to thank the gods that there were no windows in the room). “Did you really think I’d give up that easily?” Myungsoo whispers into Sungyeol’s ears and he does it so effortlessly that it’s only a few words to make Sungyeol succumb to weeks of enduring tears and to touch him.
He sobs into Myungsoo’s neck and he feels the other’s hands around his waist.
“You’re beautiful, Sungyeol” Myungsoo comforts, “You’re always beautiful to me”
It was probably either Woohyun or Sunggyu who told on him but he didn’t really care right now because this is his place, his fortress, his heaven and his home. There’s so many things Sungyeol wants to say, but Myungsoo doesn’t let him and only shushes him with kisses and comforts him with reassuring whispers.
Maybe he could trust him, he just has to.
