how many viable follicles would normally be produced in a typical cycle?

not sure. I believe in women who ovulate regularly, there's a viable follicle each cycle...

I don't ovulate unless I'm taking hormones (and even that is touch and go). This past cycle was the first time. Thing is, generally women taking hormones develop more than one viable follicle.
