ok, see I heard the Coca Cola Bear was unemployed in Greenland. I'm glad he's getting work. He was on a bit of a slippery slope for a while and I wasn't sure what good could come of it....
I very much enjoyed reading the Golden Compass. Me and my friends played the "What would your daemon be?" game for weeks after. And I am indeed looking forward to this film.
I felt the series went downhill after book one, though. I've got two reasons for this. One is objective, the other is not.
The objective reason is that I think Pullman, like many fantasy writers, let the world and the scope of the story get too big for him to handle. Not to mention the fact that I did not want to spend the better half of the 3rd book reading about a new character's anthropological experiences with wheeled sheep.
The not-so-objective reason is that Pullman has come out publicly on many occasions as trying to be the "anti-Lewis" of the genre. And I just think that Fantasy is the last place for a writer with any kind of ax to grind, especially since children's fantasy owes so much to the charming British fellow that Pullman despises so much.

But despite that, the movie looks kick-ass, especially Yoric Bearnensen (don't know how to spell it since I listened to it on audio books....)
