As I lay here quiet
Watching shadows play across my walls
I listen to a sad song and try not to cry so hard
Cause my heart is breaking with the seasons
And this spring is getting colder
The next 23 days will make me older still
And I try to turn back time
So evolution won't change me more
And the hardest part of trying
Is trying not to try so hard
But the cracks and creases in my memory
They tell me that trying is a waste
I'm not moving forward
And I'm never going back
Cause here and now is a gift of fate
So, can you tell me, where's the returns?
What they never told you was that time,
It's just a joke
A twisted, broken theory to base your life upon
Oh, you're just a pawn
In life's awful game of chess
People move the pieces
To make your life a mess
And you keep getting pushed around
Trying to get solid ground beneath you
Above you, open skies
Miles and miles to fly
But you're stuck here with your feet in the sand
When life gets hard
I'll tell you "it's alright"
Cause for what you're feeling then and there
It's what you'll want to hear
Tonight when you lie down in your grave
I'll help you out when daylight breaks
So I can help you face the day
Just as long as you can help me save my life
Cause this long and winding road,
It doesn't feel too safe
But if you help me
I'll help you find a better day
For now keep me safe and pacified
Cause the night's much too cold
To make it on my own
Without your hand to hold.
