1) Has this definition of "serving our country" been particularly common of late, to the exclusion of other definitions? I can't say that I've noticed it if it has. I don't think that there are many who would disagree with your analysis of "service".
2) Here in Lincoln they've started a program, the name of which I forget, wherein neighbors who have certain skills (gardening, cooking, child care, home repair, etc.) make those skills available to everyone in their neighborhood as much as possible. This instills a sense of community while improving the lives of those in the neighborhood. A youth movement like this, where young people volunteer their time and skills to help the people of Rochester, might be something to consider.
Tim, That's an awesome idea. How do they advertise those volunteer services, and is it only neighborhood by neighborhood? Thanks for the heads up. I hope things are good with you. Jon

Yo dudes, it's Pete. I think I told you Jon that Pat and I have been meeting with another kid from Ubuzz and the IT guy from there to create a website that creates a greater sense of community within Rochester neighborhoods. We're trying to figure out how to get it started and the technical aspects and what not, but once we get it going, the idea is to let people know what's going on around them and create interactivity and visualization within members of the community in the city. We'd like to encourage people to invest more of themselves into the city and take pride in it by taking pride in what they contribute to their community/neighborhood/apartment complex. More details to come...
