It begins accidentally. Though that always seems to be the way.
"You're worried?" Chiba asks. "About Oka-kun?"
That much is obvious, but when Maki tilts her head to look at him, she sees herself reflected in his eyes.
"Ah," she says, her nod just a tiny drop of the chin. Suddenly she can't look back up at him, his eyes penetrating too deeply. It's impossible to know what he is searching for, considering he already knows what is bothering her.
It is when she realises he just might be looking to find himself when he looks at her that she takes an inadvertent step back without knowing why. All of a sudden she looks up and sees herself falling into Chiba's eyes.
He offers out his hand and belatedly she feels the jolting ache run up her back. The offending tennis ball rolls out from under her foot and nestles itself quietly against Chiba's bag, discarded on the floor.
"How about we go get a couple Nikuman, hm?" Chiba asks, pulling Maki up to her feet. "I was going to anyway, but it's no fun eating alone."
When Maki thinks back she realises she spent most of the time her mouth wasn't busy chewing talking about Hiromi. Which is why it makes sense that she was really the only thing Chiba spoke of too.
