the language of cats

She had learnt to walk along beside him on a lead pretty quickly; Nino could admit and admire the intelligence she had. And it saved him having to pick her up and hold her close, feeling her warm fur against his face, her tiny heartbeat pulsing against his skin. A cat could never respect you if you got all mushy about it.
Unfortunately, the rest of Arashi's members had never had this essential piece of information revealed to them.
"Awwww!"
"That's so cute!"
"What's its name?" Sho asked, trying not to smile irrationally. Nino had to keep himself from smiling at the smile on Sho's face; it wasn't too hard, Sho smiled at a lot of things after all, and if you got goofy just because he had smiled you'd end up with jawache after about ten minutes.
Nino shrugged.
"Cat," he said.
"Cat?" Aiba asked.
"Cat!" Jun snorted. "Original."
Cats sense derision, and Cat was no exception, picking up the slack of the leash to make her way over to Matsumoto, sniffing suspiciously at his shoes before glaring up at him with yellow eyes.
"It's a bit scruffy isn't it," Jun commented, reaching down to pet Cat regardless. "But I suppose with a brush, and maybe a nice diamond collar, it would clean up alright- ARGH!"
Cat hissed again for good measure, and settled herself at Matsumoto's feet, claws splaying to dig into the carpet happily. Nino's satisfied little smirk matched Cat's almost exactly, but he hid his behind his PSP and pretended not to care.
"I think Matsujun may have a point," Aiba began, trying to sound diplomatic. He always went in with the best of intentions, but never came out sounding even a little bit smart, in Nino's opinion. "Cat does look a little bit like... Well, he might appreciate some more attention than this, you know?"
Nino did know, but he didn't need anyone else pointing it out to him. When he was good and ready, he would do what he wanted. He glanced over the top of his PSP to see Cat contemplating Aiba.
The idea of Cat hissing at or scratching Aiba made you cringe in exactly the same way the idea of Aiba kicking a kitten did. They would both just be so helpless in the face of danger. Cat seemed to sense this, and simply began to lick herself instead, beginning with the front paws.
"She," Nino said idly.
"Huh?"
"She's a she," Nino replied, for clarification. "Not a boy-cat."
"It's true," Ohno said sagely, as if anyone would even think to disagree. Both Jun and Sho jumped visibly after realising Ohno was actually awake and alert, but as for how long he had been following the conversation, that was anyone's guess.
"Boy-cats, you see," Ohno began, sliding himself off the couch and onto the floor and scooting towards Cat, "have really, really big balls. You'd notice them."
Nino snorted out loud before he could stop himself. Sho went an interesting shade of pink, then fuschia, and then scarlet, his lips twitching in an effort to find something to say. It was almost tangible in the air, the fact that he didn't want to tell Ohno off after he had piped up conversation all on his own, but that he thought it was dreadfully inappropriate.
Sometimes Sho seemed to forget that they weren't juniors anymore.
"But!" Aiba retorted (but not before having tried to peer very obviously at Cat's backside), "what about when they... stop cats from having babies?"
"Neuter them, you mean," Jun said, and you could tell he wanted to roll his eyes at Aiba and smirk at him for not knowing the word, but for the fact that Jun understood the language of cats in that respect, and knew that sometimes kicking Aiba was absolutely no more fun than kicking a kitten.
"Yeah, so... don't they take everything away?"
"They still have balls," Ohno insisted, leaning in as though to confide in Aiba especially, "they're just not as big anymore. But you could still tell a boy-cat from a girl-cat. That and the shape of their asshole."
"OHNO-KUN," Sho coughed really, really loudly. And because he spoke whilst also fake-coughing and real-choking all at once, it kind of came out more like, "UHMOKUM!" which only made Ohno and Aiba look at him with equally confused raised eyebrows.
"Can I get you a drink, Sho-kun?" Jun asked sweetly, meeting Nino's eyes for a conspiratorial grin.
As Jun walked away before waiting for an answer, Nino couldn't help but think what unexpected fun this had been after all.
Perhaps next time he would bring in his pet tarantula, Legs.
