Question about Stroheckers prescription

Sep 23, 2016 10:38

I get T from Stroheckers. My prescription is valid for a few months and I'm allowed to get 4 refills total. However, at my usage rate, I only use 2. I'd like to get the additional 2 refills as backup, so I don't need to see the prescribing doctor as often ( Read more... )

The issue is that testosterone is a controlled substance https://www.dea.gov/druginfo/ds.shtml so AFAIK the pharmacies themselves have limits on how many they can give you based on your prescription.

I knew there was some time of limit, but I thought it only limited the length of prescription the doctor is allowed to write, i.e. the max is a 10-month prescription. Would refill limits be determined on a pharmacy, state, or national basis?

Thanks for the link. It seems like I'll have to do more research than I expected :S

My guess is all of the above with pharmacy being the most restrictive and federal the least restrictive.

I use Strohecker's as well, in fact I've used them ever since I started T 11+ years ago. Every time I've asked for a refill after the prescription has expired, they simply fax a request to my doctor for a new prescription. The whole process usually takes all of an extra day, unless I call in on a Friday. In that case, the doctor's office sends the new prescription over Monday. As long as I don't go more than a year between visits, my doctor has no problem with this. YMMV, of course, based on your own doctor's policies, but next time you call in a refill on a lapsed prescription the pharmacist should just offer to contact your doctor for a renewal on your behalf.

I second this* and follow it up with most pharmacies will have someway of doing something like this. CVS has a "refill request" option online and on their app (I'm sure in person or via phone as well). I would be surprised if other pharmacies don't have a similar option.

* I no longer use Strohecker's partly because of insurance and partly because of that one time when there was a kerfuffle with a refill when they had to stop compounding T for a while.
