LiveJournal is still here, but how do we go forward?

Mar 18, 2022 13:34

There were rumours of a total disconnect of the Russian part of the internet. LiveJournal, which is owned by a Russian company and is hosted in Russia, would therefore also be unreachable. There was some panic and many people moved their journals to Dreamwidth. I was not that worried, as I blog on my own WordPress instance and only cross-post to LJ ( Read more... )

Well, you probably know my opinion of DW and its minions, so I won't go into that again. I'll just say that I'll miss seeing your posts.

I'll just add one other thought, though: for years, LJ has been a strong venue for communication among Russia's dissidents ... and for that reason alone it seems more important than ever to get past the xenophobia and hope that LJ survives.

I do know that you're not a fan of DW, but must admit I'm sketchy on the details.

I know that LJ plays a role in Russian politics. But given the fact that I have literally zero overlap with that part of LJ, me not contributing posts anymore will have no impact on that.
I must say that I do not appreciate the accusation of being xenophobic. If that was my motivation, I would have left LJ in 2007 when it was acquired by SUP.

I need to apologize for the way I built that sentence, because I in no way meant to suggest that you were personally being xenophobic. It was a reflection of some other, broader discussions I've had, which descended into xenophobia and virtue signaling almost immediately.

I have a DW account, but I don't use it, I don't read my feed there and I'm not cross-posting. I'm staying here.

I'm sorry to be so blunt, but I think it's wrong to abandon LJ just because it happens to be a Russian platform. All indicators point to what I sensed all along, that LJ is quietly resisting what's going on over there. They should be supported in that, IMO. Would I refuse to listen to a Russian person resisting their regime just because they happen to be Russian, and refuse to support them? God forbid, on the contrary. I've only had two friends migrate to DW so far, but they'll have to do without me since I hate that site. And to be honest, I've lost a bit of respect for people running over there on the misguided assumption that leaving LJ is the right thing to do.

I'm glad you're moving to DW, I was afraid I'd have to miss your posts if you didn't!

I have both, but I consider LJ my main journal. Though I will be crossposting/reading both, since I have some good friends who left for DW.

I understand people's reasons for both staying and going, and I am not going to judge people who make decisions for what is best for them. But we are connected on both so it is all good!
