A group of 13 suspected gang members has been beaten and burned to death by a mob in Haiti's capital after being seized while police were searching their vehicle.
The suspects were reportedly beaten with gasoline-soaked tyres before being set alight in Port-au-Prince on Monday.
Police say they confiscated weapons from them just before the incident.
They have not explained how members of the public got hold of the suspects.
Haiti has descended into increasing lawlessness since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in July 2021.
The United Nations said in a report published on Monday that insecurity in the capital has reached levels similar to countries at war.
Armed gangs continue to compete to expand their territorial control and that clashes with police and rival gangs have "become more violent and more frequent," claiming many civilian lives, it added.
Gang violence led to the death of nearly 70 people, including 18 women and two children, between 14 and 19 April alone, according to the UN.
Many schools and health centres have been forced to close and the violence has also affected access to many goods and services.
"The people of Haiti continue to suffer one of the worst human rights crises in decades and a major humanitarian emergency," the report reads.
Since Moise's assassination, the Caribbean nation has been led by Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who has failed to rein in the gangs that now control an estimated 60% of the capital.
Mr Henry and UN officials have repeatedly called for the deployment of an international force to help police in their fight against the criminal gangs.
So far, no country has offered to lead such a force. The United States has been trying to convince Canada to take on the role but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has so far resisted.
Mr Henry has said it is key to providing security so that long-postponed elections can be held.

«Какая-то богом проклятая территория», - говорит екатеринбуржец Станислав Белоглазов о стране, в которой путешественника ждут горы мусора, разруха, нищета и войны бандитских группировок. В его копилке путешествий уже больше 150 стран, и не так давно фотограф решил ее пополнить. Он набрался храбрости и провел новогоднюю ночь в одной из самых бедных и опасных стран мира - Гаити. В общей сложности на острове уралец был пять дней.
Станислав Белоглазов нередко делится с E1.RU своими работами. В честь своего дня рождения фотограф рассказал о жутких находках на гаитянском рынке, вуду-ритуалах, а также о районах, в которые не суются даже вооруженные полицейские.

Республика Гаити - одно из самых нестабильных государств мира и самая бедная страна Америки, постоянно страдающая от голода, стихийных бедствий и государственных переворотов.
- Гаити - это страна, занимающая половину одноименного острова. А другая половина, справа на картах, прекрасная, процветающая Доминикана, в которой всегда всё хорошо и безопасно. В Гаити же, в левой половине, - вечно войны, государственные перевороты, нищета и беднота. Землетрясения, тайфуны, наводнения, а в Доминикане - пальмы, море, пляжи, туристы… Рай земной, - говорит Станислав.

Екатеринбуржец не сразу решился посетить Гаити, однако потом собралась команда, участники которой решили устроить себе незабываемое приключение.
- До этого я ездил по Доминикане, мы подъезжали к границе, но тогда мы не то что не рискнули - народ не сильно жаждал и не проверил, что и как. А в этот раз у меня собралась компания, которая захотела что-то экзотичнее. Я понимал, что что-то читать в путеводителях и что-то спрашивать у тревел-блогеров или турфирмы - бесполезно: соврут либо в одну сторону, либо в другую. На всех таких сложных территориях приходится действовать, имея не один четкий план, а набор вариантов, и выбирать, что реализовать по обстановке, - подчеркнул фотограф.

Станислав решил, что отправиться на официальном такси из аэропорта - безопасно. По пути в отель можно узнать у водителя, готов ли он тебя перемещать и далее - по городу или по всей стране. Выясняется, что из соображений безопасности таксист готов возить клиента только в отдельные районы, а не куда вздумается.
- Ему ведь жизнь дорога, и машина ему дорога, а если она еще и фирме принадлежит, то не то, что жизнью рисковать - водитель даже возможной царапиной на кузове не рискнет. А раз он не собирается собой рисковать, то и мной, соответственно. Обсуждаю с ним, куда можно ехать, куда не стоит соваться. Я читал, что интересно фотографировать рынок в даунтауне (центр города. - Прим. ред.). Только вот три года назад там было классно и интересно, а сейчас там настолько криминально, что ни один водитель меня туда везти не пожелал. Даже местная полиция туда не суется, тоже жить хотят, - объяснил екатеринбуржец.

Уралец учел советы местных и целенаправленно не заходил в опасные районы.
- Мы хотели еще прогуляться вокруг памятника и интересной архитектуры… А нет, водитель нас поторопил: «Тут можно гулять, у музея, но хоть здесь вы только что видели местных школьников-экскурсантов и даже полицейских, но сейчас солнце садится, и эта территория переходит под контроль банд, надо отсюда сваливать», - рассказал Станислав Белоглазов.

Скорее всего, местные рынки заставят вздрогнуть любого путешественника. Кроме продовольствия, здесь продаются «наборы для колдовства», которые могут использоваться не только в благих целях.
- Это обычный рынок. Тут продают фруктики, тут вот крупы, а здесь ряд таких магазинчиков. Тут мягкие куколки вуду, которые они используют для ритуалов, их можно купить, - вспомнил Станислав. - И что самое интересное - соседство: иконы - и тут же гробики для вуду-ритуалов.

- Это человеческая кость и человеческая челюсть - они настоящие. Это реальный человеческий череп, я его в руках держал. При желании мог его купить, как сувенир или использовать для ритуалов, - говорит Станислав.

Новогоднюю ночь Станислав решил провести в необычной обстановке: он отправился на мистическое представление - вуду-ритуал.
- Само по себе вуду не является чем-то страшным. Всё это работает с подсознанием, психосоматикой. Фейерверки в новогоднюю ночь были, но на официальные банкеты и пьянки в отели нас не звали, так почему бы не потусить на каком-нибудь ритуале? Денег мы, конечно, заплатили, но специально для нас никто духов не беспокоил. Мы посмотрели, как выглядит местное колдовство, сфотографировали, но нас и наши души к процессу не привлекали, с нас поклонения местным божествам не требовали, - говорит фотограф.

Станислав видел много ритуалов и жертвоприношений, но всё-таки для него это был новый опыт. Несмотря на огромное количество кукол вуду на рынке, участники не использовали их, а взяли живого петуха.
- Выглядело это по крайней мере оригинально. Кто-то грыз живого петуха, кто-то алкоголь выливал в себя и тут же его выплескивал. Потом затеяли тортик какой-то по себе размазывать. Тот, что погрыз пернатого, продолжил бесноваться без животины - петуха у него отобрали и унесли в сторонку. Когда в участника ритуала вселяется дух вуду, он может вытворять всё что угодно, - объяснил екатеринбуржец.
Сам процесс вуду-ритуала Станислав разгадать не смог. Участники не говорили по-английски (в стране говорят на французском и креольском), но позволили фотографировать. Посмотрите, как это выглядело.

Brazil referee decapitated after stabbing player

Football spectators in northern Brazil decapitated a referee after he fatally stabbed a player for refusing to leave the pitch, officials say.
An angry mob stormed the field during the amateur game in the state of Maranhao and stoned Otavio da Silva to death before severing his head.
Police said the murder was in retaliation for Mr Silva stabbing player Josenir dos Santos.
One man has been arrested over the killing and investigations continue.
The incident took place on 30 June in the remote town of Pio XII, but news of the event has been slow to emerge.
The state's Public Safety Department said it started when the referee and Mr Santos got into fist fight after the player was sent off but refused to leave the pitch.

Mr Silva then pulled out a knife and wounded Mr Santos, who died on his way to the hospital.
The player's friends and relatives rushed onto the field, stoned the referee to death and dismembered his body, the department said in a statement.
So far police have arrested a 27-year-old man in connection with the crime.
"We will identify and hold accountable all those involved," police chief Valter Costa was quoted as saying by local media.
"One crime will never justify another."

Gangs sow terror in Brazil cities for third night

Several cities in north east Brazil are suffering from serious unrest caused by marauding criminal gangs.
For the third night, gang members set buses ablaze and carried out gun attacks on buildings in urban areas in Rio Grande do Norte state.
The attacks are thought to have been sparked by conditions in jails holding gang members.
Brazil's government sent hundreds of federal security forces to the region earlier this week.
Justice and Security Minister Flavio Dino said hundreds more could be sent in the coming days as unrest continues. The state government has convened a crisis cabinet and has asked the federal government for more support.
The attacks were ordered from within the state's jails when gang members' requests for televisions, electricity and conjugal visits were turned down, Brazilian news outlet Terra quoted the state's secretary of public security Francisco Araujo as saying.
Conditions in Brazil's notoriously overcrowded jails have long been under scrutiny.
In 2017, the government sent a Penitentiary Intervention Task Force (FTIP) to Rio Grande do Norte jails following a riot which left at least 30 inmates dead. Some have said the task force routinely uses violent methods to bring prisons under its control.
Local media have reported that two rival gang factions have now struck a temporary truce and become allies in the attacks against security forces.
Several cities in Rio Grande do Norte have suspended public transport and closed schools in the wake of the violence.
At least two people were killed in clashes with police earlier in the week and 67 people have been arrested, reported AFP.
Across the region, police have also seized a number of firearms, explosive devices and vehicles, as well as drugs and money.

Rebel police officers rioted in Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince on Thursday in protest at the killing of more than a dozen colleagues by criminal gangs.
The rioting officers blame the government for not taking action.
More than 100 demonstrators blocked streets, burned tyres, broke security cameras and damaged vehicles.
Local media said several officers broke through the gates of the prime minister's residence and attempted to enter Haiti's international airport.
The National Union of Haitian Police Officers says 14 men have been killed since the start of the year in various gang attacks on police stations.
Seven officers were killed in shootout on Wednesday alone, according to Haiti's National Police.
Scores of civilians and angry police officers took to the streets in Port-au-Prince to denounce the violence following the murder of two officers inside a police station in a town in northern Haiti and the execution-style killing of four more on the street outside.
Some of them reportedly went to the official residence of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, Vant Bef Info said.
When they found it empty, they headed to Port-au-Prince airport where Mr Henry had just landed after a summit in Argentina.
Protesters apparently tried to gain access to the airport by breaking its windows, but Mr Henry managed to slip away, Haiti's Radio Tele Metronome said.
Many businesses and schools remained shut on Thursday in the wake of the protests.
Port-au-Prince and other cities have been racked for months by escalating deadly gang warfare, and Haitian media have reported that the country has seen a marked rise in kidnappings since the start of the year.
A Haitian human rights group, the National Network of the Defense of Human Rights, said 78 police officers have been killed since Mr Henry came to power in 2021.
Outgunned by the multiple criminal gangs, Haiti's police have been unable to halt the violence.
In October 2022, the Henry government appealed to the international community for a multi-national security force to help restore order - but the call has so far gone unanswered, despite some increased aid from the US and Canada.
Armed groups control and terrorise at least 60% of the capital and its surroundings, according to Haitian human rights groups, and are controlling the roads in and out of the city.
Last September, gangs seized a major fuel depot in Port-au-Prince's port, blocking the delivery of imported fuel and hampering efforts to distribute food and medicines.
The blockade forced many businesses to close and complicated the distribution of petrol and bottled drinking water, all while a cholera outbreak worsened.
The UN envoy to Haiti, Helen La Lime, said on Wednesday that "the situation in Haiti is grave".
"You know that gang-driven violence has reached new heights. On average, we we face one kidnapping every six hours in 2022.
"We will not win the fight without significant levels of additional support," Ms La Lime said.
