My child wants to learn to play the piano... and she wants ME to teach her... and...
I am going to give it a go.
I swore I would NEVER attempt to do such a thing. NEVER. Not in a million years. But she specificially asked me to.
Today we went out and bought a beginner set of books that has the theory stuff, technique stuff, and all that. I did lay down some ground rules for both of us.
Rules for her:
1) She has to listen to the instructions I give her and follow them.
2) She needs to put forth effort to learn.
3) She needs to remember that this is something new to her and to be patient with herself.
4) She needs to remember that TEACHING piano is something new to me... and to be patient with me.
5) If I start getting impatient with her and forgetting that it is new stuff for her, she needs to say "Mommy, remember this is new to me. Please be patient."
Rules for me:
1) This is new for her and I need to be patient with her as she learns.
2) Even though there are basic skills that she needs to know to play piano reasonably well, this is supposed to be fun.
In any case, we'll see how it goes. If she finds herself enjoying playing yet reaches a point that she needs more than I can give from her as a teacher, we will find her a setting in which she can learn better.
Anyone tried to teach a child how to play a musical instrument and any survival tips? (For me OR for the child??)
