I'd say a free travel pass is a very uplifting happening! Being 60 has to be good for something, you know.
Having a boarder is a fine thing! Of course things are looking up. Though I'm not sure I could live with a smoker. She'd have to smoke outside at my house.

The smoking won't be much of a problem,as my spare room gives onto the roof terrace, so she can smoke out there.

The travel pass is brilliant!

Now that I'm a non smoker, it would be a deal breaker. But I have a lanai a smoker could smoke.

Yes, I'll have to make her smoke outside, or at least leave the door of the spare room open onto the terrace, but the company will be nice otherwise.

So happy things are looking up. A travel pass is certainly worth having and I love my bus pass :) You are eligible for the senior rail pass as well. I get mine at the council office as it's a couple of quid cheaper than getting it at a rail station. A third off makes a huge difference to rail fares. I suppose you'd have to use it a couple of times (like coming to Ely!) to make it pay for it's initial cost.

Great that you have a lodger and that she might be help to help with getting some work for you. I see from other comments that her room has a terrace. I wouldn't be shy about asking her to smoke outside.
