Character Name: John Grimm aka Reaper aka John whatever last name he and Sam make up.
Canon: Doom [movie/book cannon]
Personality: John is gruff and kind of an ass at times, but he means well. He is a loyal friend to the few he has, even if he makes up lies about his past to keep people from finding out about the C24. He tries to keep people at arm’s length, but tends to fail at that because as much as he may bitch and grump, he likes people and being around them. If you can get past the rough outside, he’s not that bad of a guy.
All John really strives for in normalcy in his life, and the C24 can make that hard. As much as John has it together some times small things will set him off and bringing up memories he doesn’t want around. He has nightmares on occasion and as much as he loves Sam he wishes he had someone else to talk to about them, because they aren’t always about the mission to Olduvi. Sometimes the nightmares are about the other bad things he has done (see history). Sam tells him these things aren’t his fault, but he doesn’t always believe her. He believes that the C24 is more then likely his punishment for the things he did in his time in RRTS.
He is over protective of the people he cares about almost annoyingly so, he just doesn’t want anything bad to happen to the few people in his life. Nothing annoys him more though then his sister always pushing him at people when he just wants to hide. It’s not like she’s a social butterfly either, so he just does the same thing to her and pushes out to be with people. He always felt she was better with people, and though neither of them choose this life, he doesn't feel Sam deserved to be in the same hell as him.
History:
John Grimm was born in 2020. He is younger than his sister, Sam, by about two minutes, but he tells people she got pulled out first because she was doing it wrong. Both of his parents were archaeologists working on Mars. Even though they weren't on Earth, their childhood was a happy and normal one, until in 2027 when their parents died in a cave in.
Though his grandparents did the best they could raising him and his sister , he was still damaged by the death of his parents and as soon as he was old enough, he enlisted in the RRTS, a privatized Marine Corp. He didn’t tell Sam that he was doing this until he had already signed the papers and was ready to ship out. This put a strain on their relationship because she felt him that enlisting wasn’t going to allow him to live up to his full potential.
Their relationship became even more strained when Sam took a job on Mars at the same site their parents were working at when they died. Their relationship became limited to birthday and Christmas cards.
John’s troubles worsened when a mission went wrong, and he felt that it was his fault, because he knew the weapons they were taking were still under test, and would more then likely jam up in the planets humidity. He informed UAC of the problem before they left for the mission, but they told him the weapons needed to be field-tested.
As they were fighting the anti-UAC gorillas the weapons did jam and his best friend Jumper died, John ended up having to kill one of the gorillas with his bare hands and was disturbed when he saw that the gorilla couldn’t be more the 16 years old. He blamed himself for how wrong the mission went and dealt with it as best he could and tried to morn the loss of his friend.
But the people at UAC did not feel he that he had the proper emotional response to the mission, so they gave him “therapy” which consisted of locking him in a glass coffin-like box with electrodes attached to him. Forcing him to relive the sights, smells, and sounds of the mission, immersing him completely in the memory as if he were still there but couldn’t change any of the events that happened. They forced him to relive the event until he had the emotional response that they deemed appropriate.
This kind of messed him up and made him feel guiltier about all the mistakes he had made on that mission. It also gave him an attitude that he is not allowed to make mistakes and has to watch what he tells people about how he is feeling
Shortly after he comes back from therapy, his unit was called in for a mission to Mars, where he was reunited with his sister. The RRTS got the call because the Olduvai base was under attack by some unknown creature. John’s unit was sent in to help get rid of the creatures and help collect the research data from the site. His sister’s research work was based on the remains of a human-like being that had been found on the planet. The being had twenty-four chromosomes instead of the normal twenty-three that humans have. This extra chromosome made the beings ‘superhuman’, immune to diseases, aging, and injury.
John’s sister didn’t know that the UAC had taken her research and started testing it on humans, trying to create super soldiers. Instead, they created a sort of zombie that had broken loose in the facility and was killing the people at the site. Sam examined the bodies of the monsters and realized that they were humans that had been infected with the C24 and that the twenty-fourth chromosome either would turn a person into a crazed monster or into an immortal.
John’s commander, Sarge, refused to waver from his orders to contain the threat by any means possible despite the Grimms’ protests that not everyone at the site was a danger. John watched in horror as Sarge killed The Kid, the youngest and newest member of RRTS, because he sided with John and Sam. Sarge proceeded to kill everyone housed at the site. During the argument where John and Sam were trying to explain that not everyone was a threat, the monsters attacked the group. In the craziness a ricochet bullet hit John.
John and Sam hid in a storage area where John realized that he had been injured. Unable to watch her brother bleed to death, she injected him with the twenty-fourth chromosome. John protested, telling his sister that he has done bad and horrible things and would turn into one of the monsters. But being whom she is Sam tells him that she knows him, and knows that deep down he is a good man, and injected him anyway. John handed her his gun and told her to shoot him in the head and heart if he started to change. Then everything went black as John passed out.
When he came to, all his wounds were healed and he was not a monster. It felt like his senses were in over drive, his main concern was that Sam was gone. It turned out Sarge had taken her and tortured her and laid her out as bait for John and unannounced to him Sarge has also shoot Sam up with C24 to punish John for questioning his orders, but she like John has the positive reaction.
Sarge had obviously gone off the deep end and was infected and turning into a monster. Making the fight difficult, but in the end John wins killing Sarge, destroying the site as they make their way back to Earth.
After a few years in hiding, John and Sam created new lives for themselves. Sam found a job teaching, and John started med school deciding it was time for a positive change. it wasn’t that far off for him anyway considering he was his unit’s medic.
Strengths: He can’t die and has healing powers. He stopped aging because of the C24. He has some super human abilities: speed, hearing, and he can’t even get the common cold. In fact if he did get sick, it would more then likely be something that would kill anyone else. He has very low physic abilities, which he only discovered when he was trying to find Sam at the end of the movie. They work better with Sam more so than anyone else more then likely because they are twins both dosed with C24. But it’s more like he can just pick up on vague feelings; nothing is super clear unless he is in a close relationship/friendship with that person. He is also a trained medic, which doesn’t come in handy for him, but may for others. He is also, despite being an ass, a good friend and person. He cares deeply about people even if he doesn’t want them that close to him.
Weaknesses: He can get very paranoid, very quickly, when talking with people, (period) this is mostly due to the “therapy” he underwent so he plays things very close to his chest, and doesn’t let many people in. Also, he isn’t that nice of a person to deal with at the start, mostly because he feels he doesn’t deserve friends. Because of the C24 he views himself as a monster and this hinders him in a lot of areas. At times, odd things can set off a bout of angst, like people asking him questions about his past. The fact that he doesn’t really have anyone to talk to other then his sister bothers him at times. Because he would like to have a normal life for himself with a love interest and friends but because of the mistakes his made the people he’s got killed and the C24 he honestly doesn’t feel he deserves to be happy in that way.
One of his main worries is that if the knowledge of C24 gets out that the tests will start again, and he’ll end up a lab rat or worse, his sister will, and bad things involving monsters and screaming and lots and lots of blood would start happening again. He hates immortality and doesn’t view it as much of a gift. He also fears that if he shares anything of his past or about the C24 others will view him as a monster as well and no longer want him around. He also finds it his job to protect his sister, Sam, and will deny himself things he wants or would make him happy if there is even the slightest chance that it could put her at risk. He has a few odd phobias including enclosed, tight coffin spaces and flying as well as Ark-like transporter travel.
First Person Sample:
[ John feels his stomach roll as he reappears in a room too much like a military base, appearing in a fashion that was too close to Ark travel. He fights the brief wave of nausea and feels a deep seeded (seeded or seated?) dread settle over him, fighting the urge to keep his eyes closed. He lets them fly open and looks around the room quickly. Not Olduvai... that’s one positive. Not some lab...that’s one more, but right now that’s all the positives he can come up with. ] What the fuck is this bullshit? Sam! [ Sam, where are you? He reaches out to her as best he can, but can’t sense her anywhere, which is really pissing him the hell off. ]
[ John takes a deep breath and takes another look around the room and sees an odd little man doing an intro video of some type and he really, really, really wants to punch the screen or find this motherfucker who dragged him here and wring his neck.]
Third Person Sample:
John walked the hallways of the station trying his best to still his mind, he was back in space, was brought here without his knowledge and Sam was here. Those three things were enough to lead him down a dark road filled with nightmarish memories. Memories filled with dark creatures and his friends dying, and blood (I’d put a period here and make a short fragment of Lots and lots for impact) lots and lots of blood.
But he had to maintain, had too keep his cool; he had to protect his sister and himself, make sure their secret stayed just that, a secret. Because if the power of C24 fell into the wrong hands, well that thought sent a cold shudder down his spine.
But John focused on what he did best these days: keeping a low profile and protecting his sister. He took it upon himself to figure out what the fuck was going on and why they were brought here, why they had these goddamn wrist bands on and a stupid looking jumpsuits.
He and Sam would need to come up with a different surname; their first names where common enough, but having Grimm as a last name was like throwing up a giant red flag, and it’s only been ten years since Olduvai... so they had to be careful.
Ten years, ten goddamn years and he didn’t look or feel any older, and he never would. He was stuck like this, stuck at this point in his life, so was Sam, but they would make the best of it. They had too. How many more decades until Olduvai is just a footnote in some history book? How much longer would he and Sam have to worry about people recognizing them? These were questions for later. For now he had to figure out what the hell they where doing here.
