The birth rate is very low in Australia, and to encourage breeding the government gives out a once off payment of $3000 when you have a baby. This will rise to $4000 in July 2006, and $5000 in July 2008. As a result, people are having babies, which is okay by me, it's just that now the rate of teenage pregnancies has absolutely skyrocketed. I was ( Read more... )

I've told you this before, but you're brilliant. And you are so much wiser than all of us post-secondary kids. No joke.

Sometimes I envy your world experience.

Look at you guys, you're on your way to the top, sometimes I envy you post-secondary kids.

How much fun would it be to be able to spend a week anywhere you wanted just to experience their way of life, their thinking, etc. (Mexico, Brazil, Sweden, Italy, India...) Damn all the barriers.

Yes, How nice it would be to spend some time somewhere else, without worrying about whether it is important to your degree. Sometimes school is so binding.

that really does make australia sound bad. but it can't be all of australia, or the country wouldn't be running. believe it or not this actually does happen here as well, i just don't know of any places that have that much concentrated government reliance. i'm sure there are some, but i've never been exposed to it myself.

some family friends were living off of it for a while and it took a while for everyone to convince them that it would be better to actually do something with their life. luckily the kids are growing up in an area where there isn't a lot of that going on, so they, from what i can tell, have a pretty good direction in life away from living off the government. plus it's a lot more incentive for kids to have be able to stand on their own and afford the cool things their friends have, but even so, at least they want to be able to go out and make the money.

hehe... a pokie... (sorry, couldn't resist)
