Umi was no stranger to having petty arguments with her husband. Hayato was not the easiest person to get along with and she could respect that in the sense that he was a busy man who was under a great deal of stress. But that didn't mean that there weren't SOME things that still irritated her.

He was rude. Always had been. The years had matured him considerably, but he still had that biting, sarcastic wit that made one's toes curl. The rudeness was often coupled with his mean, antisocial tendencies. Pushing people away was to be expected from him, but Umi saw his blatant disregard for love and affection to be a problem.

It frustrated her because he could be kind. He could be sweet. However, the chip on his shoulder kept him from trusting others and being civil.

This particular squabble had been over something completely ridiculous-- Umi couldn't even remember --but it resulted in her stomping off to the bedroom to straighten up while he brushed it off completely and left for the living room to read.

The key was that the both of them felt a smug sense of satisfaction in thinking that they had won. It was like smashing a brick wall into another brick wall, always ending in a deadlock that fizzled out by dinner.

The house had long since fallen quiet and Umi had finished cooling herself off. She was still convinced that she was the victor... but it was only noble to go and make peace with the loser.

"Hayato?" She called out, expecting to hear a grumble or frustrated grunt in response.

But there was nothing.

That was strange...

"Hayato?" She raised her voice, "Where'd you go?"

She kept walking until she hit the front room. He wasn't at his piano. He wasn't reading.

Did he leave? Was he that worked up...?

Umi made her way to the center of the room where Hayato's prized possession-- his couch --sat. As she approached, she saw one of his feet peeking over the armrest and there was an instant sense of relief.

"Answer me when I call you, you idio--"

Her mouth shut as soon as she saw the full view of who was sprawled out on the couch.

Hayato was snoozing peacefully with Hanako curled up comfortably on his chest. A small book was tucked under his chin at one end and their daughter's head at the opposite.

"Hayato...?" Umi whispered to him softly, "Are you awake?"

Hanako shifted about to the sound of her mother's voice, eyes fluttering open for only a moment. The man lifted a hand, setting it on the small of her back to keep her from moving too far.

"Shush, Mamma... Papa's sleeping..." The little girl warned sleepily before nuzzling her face back into her father's shoulder.

"Ah..." Umi stifled a chuckle, opting to reach out and run her fingers through Hanako's hair, "I'm sorry..." Her lips were drawn into a smile, her hand slipping from Hanako's hair down to where Hayato's hand rested on her back. Her fingers curled over the side of his hand, gently squeezing. She finally heard him grumble and felt him settle further into the couch. Turning his head slightly, wisps of his shaggy silver hair fell over his lidded eyes.

This was the part of Hayato that she wanted to see more of. The quiet, loving, responsible father and husband she knew he was.
