FANDOM DISCUSSION TIME: Specifically referring to fanfiction, but I guess this can refer to any fandom-created media and the matter of feedback. I have two distinct scenarios for you that happened to me recently (because I have been reading YOI fanfic for days now) and I need opinions on them ( Read more... )

I would leave comments on both, but that might be because I comment on everything I read, regardless of what I thought of it. Often times it is difficult to leave feedback, but it seems important for me to do so, so I do.

Wow, everything? That's awesome! What do you say even if it's a story you didn't like?

It's not difficult for me because, even if there is little about a story I like, there is always something positive--you just have to find what that is and craft your comment around that.

I try to comment on everything I read if even to say I liked the premise and point out some things I thought were handled particularly well. In the first scenario, I might thank the writer for tackling a head canon you adore. In the second I'd probably commend the writing but point out the ending felt abrupt for where the story was going. Accentuate the positive in hopes of the writer keeping characters we love alive.

That's two very good points! For the second one, it wasn't so much that ending was so abrupt but I just had a visceral reaction to hit the back button.

I usually try to leave a comment in anything I finish to the end but other times (like these scenarios) I sometimes will leave kudos but not comment.

With the second scenario it would depend if the bad ending outweighed the rest of the good things.

Yeah, I do like the leave kudos still idea.

I think the bad ending did leave a sour note and ruined the fic for me personally, but it wasn't so much that it was bad as in I just didn't care for it?

I don't read much these days as I either have the time to read or write.

But when I find something and don't like the style it's written in or it's difficult to read for the lack of punctuation or even break for paragraphs, I quit reading. No matter how much I like the pairing.

And for scenario 2: I'd probably not comment. If the ending weirded me out like that, being all out of the blue and not in character at all, I'd most likely try to forget about the fic as quickly as possible.

Nobody likes to get negative feedback, but I don't need to encourage them to write the same stuff again by leaving feedback or kudos.

I'm pretty much in these same boat of thinking, so thank you! :)

For the first scenario, I'd probably just leave kudos. The second scenario is tough because it would depend on how strong my NOPE reaction was, but I'd probably just say something like "even though I loved xxx and yyy about this, the ending wasn't really my style". Sometimes with that kind of thing, I'll leave it a day or two before commenting tbh.

I don't know if I would comment on the second one to be honest, because it set off my secondhand embarrassment so badly that I wouldn't want to return. :/
