I came across this interesting book review in fully book. The small book was written by a famed sociologist, indicating the special japanese cultural phenomena - which may be responsible for some attributes that may lead the japanese to its decline. Sad, but true.
A few symptoms indicated (very briefly):

- social withdrawal by  young adult to middle

I did various researches about abnormal social behaviour in Japan while I was writing for a story once, and I came across both phenomenon. Hikikomori is indeed a problem in Japan, but I read that the same phenomenon is also prevalent in other first world countries. It just so happens Japan has an actual name for it.

About women's materialism, I think it happens to any woman regardless of culture. What makes the Japanese women different is that they would go as far as selling their bodies to rich older men just to get a Prada or Hermes.

I'd like to buy that book too if I get a chance to see it in Fully Booked. I'm very interested in odd things about the Japanese, not just anime and manga ^_^;
