BACKGROUND:
The world of Devil May Cry is set in the fictional land of Mallet Island, where a battle between the living world and the underworld has waged for more than 2000 years before the series’ beginning. The human world is the one as we know it, but these demons are very varied. There’s no real fixed shape to outline the concept of a demonic being, since they tend to be very different in intellect, shape and power. In fact, they follow what seems to be a power-based hierarchy, and the more powerful a demon is the more intelligent and capable of communicating with a human it can be. Though demons are a lot more powerful than any human, humans can still fight and even kill them (even if those humans with enough skills to do so are rare and have spent much of their life training to do so). Demons do view themselves as superior to humans, and hence, they try again and again to take over the human world.
So Mundus, the Prince of Darkness, led an attack on the human world in an attempt to take it for his own. Innumerous hordes of demons infested and attacked the human world to hunt for blood and human lives in search for more power. However, one of his own servants - the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda - had a change of heart upon falling in love with a human and single-handedly defeated Mundus and his army, sealing them into the Demon World. For that, he poured his demonic energy in order to close the door between the two realms, but also eliminated a good part of his abilities. The former Dark Knight’s activities over the next two thousand years are shrouded in legend, but it is understood that for a time, directly after defeating Mundus, he ruled over the humans before eventually vanishing.

However, just because the Hell Gate was finally closed, it didn’t mean the devils’ demise. The attacks were weaker and more sporadic, but they still made significant damage. Therefore, Demon Hunters started to appear, from individual bounty hunters to large official armies against the demonic forces.

Devil May Cry 4 takes us first to Forest of Mitis, in which there was a sudden demonic attack aiming for the city, destroying houses and causing injuries to some citizens. Luck had it that a demon hunter, Nero, was there. The attack was stopped and all demons were exterminated. Nero’s travelling companion Kyrie was also injured, such as Nero himself.

After that, they come back to their hometown and take care of their wounds. Nero would have to wear his arm in a sling for a while, given his wound on his right shoulder. His sword also took some damage and was taken for repairs. All was normal back in the castle town of Fortuna, where the people follow devotedly the Order of the Sword, a cult that besides being an institution and an authority and armed force, is also a religious group that worships Sparda as a God, and is forever grateful for his protection and good supervision over the lands, as they believed that it was there that The Dark Knight (god forbid you actually only say his surname in these games, wow) ruled as a feudal Lord back when he lived amongst the humans. This is the order that Nero, the aforementioned demon hunter, who is but a young mercenary with an impulsive nature, belongs to. This stubbornness and brash demeanor probably comes from the fact that he spent most of his childhood as an orphan and in the streets, having later been taken in by Kyrie and her brother, who he considers family. Upon being sheltered and under the care of those two, he quickly adapted into the Order both of his caretakers belonged to. We do not know much about Nero at first, only that he apparently uses two powerful weapons: his one-edged sword, Red Queen, and a two-barrel gun named Blue Rose.

In the beginning of the game, we see Nero meeting a childhood friend, Kyrie, who was singing for another mass from the Order. Nero, however, grows restless and bored of the sermon, and intends to leave the temple, but his right arm (enveloped with a casket after the injury in Mitis) starts to glow, a subtle warning of something about to happen.

Enter devil hunter Dante, son of the Legenday Dark Knight Sparda, smashing through glass in a great impression of Batman and killing Sanctus, the Order's leader, within a second (BOOM! Headshot!). He then proceeds eliminating the rest of the guards who charge in the Order’s defense since it would just look bad to put their tails between their legs and run. Finally, Nero battles Dante, awakening the Devil Bringer, the demonic power in his supposedly injured arm, though the hunter flees in the middle of the fight after showing Nero that the guards he killed don't resemble humans anymore and that things within the Order weren’t exactly what they seemed.
Nero is, from then, instructed to hunt Dante down by Credo, Kyrie's brother (you thought I wasn’t going to say his name, huh?) and the Order’s grand general, while the latter evacuates the civilians to headquarters to protect them from a heavy, almost coincidental demonic attack. Nero travels around and combats several demons, such as the fire beast Berial and the serpent-shaped Echidna, among others, sealing their respective Hellgates in the end of each battle.
He finally meets Agnus, a secretive researcher with a penchant for flare and dramatic antics and who had been creating demons artificially for the Order's use. When Agnus heavily wounds him, Nero acquires the Yamato, Dante’s twin brother Vergil’s sword as a counter attack, triggered by his survival instinct and determination to protect those he cares about - read, Kyrie - allowing him to enter into the Devil Trigger state, a powerful transformation that is ignited from the Devil Bringer on Nero’s arm. Agnus, however, manages to escape back to the Order’s headquarters and informing his superiors (and in the meantime we see Sanctus rising from the dead with eerily red flashing eyes) about Nero's new abilities.

Credo takes responsibility for capturing Nero, and reveals his artificial demonic powers before engaging in battle with him, utterly convinced that he was some sort of human evolution, an “angel”, only to be defeated by the demonic powers of the Devil Bringer. Agnus suddenly appears and holds Kyrie hostage, taking her back to Headquarters and joining Credo and Nero into a mission to save Kyrie.

Nero arrives to the Order of the Sword and meets with Dante a second time, who tells him that he came for his twin brother’s sword, Yamato - things with such power had to stay in the family, after all. But upon seeing Nero's determination and need for the power the katana brought, Dante has a change of heart and allows him to keep it in order to save his damsel in distress.

Nero hurries on his quest until he finds that Sanctus was, indeed, alive, and standing on a gigantic statue which was called The Savior, in honor of the demon that their Order worshipped. It’s part of Sanctus plans to use this statue to eliminate the demons that they had previously unleashed, to make the Order’s power and influence over the people of Fortuna even stronger, and expand to other places. For the statue to work, and aware of Kyrie’s deep connection to Nero, he kidnapped her to bait him into uniting himself with her within the core of the statue (creepy, much?), claiming that the reason for Nero’s Devil Bringer and unusual looks (white-silver hair) is that he carries the blood of Sparda, the final element that serves as an ignition key.
Along Nero’s journey, the demons defeated by him referred to some similarities between Nero and someone non-descript. It’s only now that we get a bigger hint at the fact that Nero does have demonic blood mingled with the human and therefore explains his ability to wield demonic power. However, a direct connection between Nero, Sparda, Dante or Vergil, is unmentioned along the entirety of the game, and remains unknown.

Finally, Nero tries to fight Sanctus, though he uses Kyrie to his advantage and manages to capture Nero with The Savior. Credo appears in his artificial-demonic shape and attempts to save him and his sister, but ends up mortally wounded by Sanctus, and Nero is absorbed into the statue. Dante appears once again, and with the excuse of getting his sword back (even if Credo did ask him to grant one last dying request), he proceeds to save both Kyrie and Nero. But then again, that’s a story for Dante to tell. In a nutshell, he followed The Savior back to town, and not only did he destroy the minor Hell Gates on the way, he was also able to retrieve the Yamato and destroy the true Hell Gate beneath the city. He was confronted by Sanctus and The Savior then, but was able to weaken it by destroying the jewels on its surface.

He then helped Nero escape from the heart by giving him back the Yamato. Nero then manages to get into the Sacred Heart of the Savior to confront Sanctus, who reveals his demonic appearance and brandishes the Sparda, the sword once used by the Dark Knight with the same name. After their fight, Sanctus finds himself surprised since that weapon won't give him the strength to defeat Nero, and is then destroyed. Nero saves Kyrie, and manages to get out of the statue with both swords and the girl. However, the statue continues rampaging and, more confident about his power than even, embracing his demonic trait and heritage, Nero destroys it, using his Devil Bringer.

PERSONALITY:
Cocky. Arrogant. Foul-mouthed. Insubordinate, and yet, human. These are all words that are used to address Nero in the game.

He is known in The Order of the Sword as a talented, yet extremely rebellious mercenary. Even though the Order considers the sword the only honorable weapon to be used in the war against the demons, Nero not only has his one-edged blade, but also a double-barrel revolver called the Blue Rose, going against the normal protocol. Somewhat authority-phobic, Nero has no qualms in claiming that he dislikes hearing the sermons from the priests of the order, since they were a bore. Added to that rises his refusal to wear a normal uniform. Those are all proof of his refusal to standards and rules and a testimony to his impetuous nature. However, while Nero was at the beginning somewhat ashamed of his arm and tried to hide it, his adventure in DMC4 made him realize that it was a gift instead of a curse, to be used to protect, and do some heavy “clean up”.

While he’s mostly quiet and a lone wolf, if you pull certain strings, then I suggest you sit down and suck it up, son. Nero happens to have a sharp tongue, and dislikes not having the last word. The main reason why the Order sends him to do the dirty work alone and not in a team is that he often has a sardonic attitude, which suits him just fine; he offers no immediate credit to his peers, is easily suspicious and is prone to disobeying orders - the person who actually might get away with him nodding and following his orders is Credo, someone who he clearly respects a lot, even if he never hides it when he’s unhappy about it.
He takes nothing for granted, and has a rather skeptical view of the world in itself.

While he’s mostly quiet and a lone wolf, the main reason why the Order sends him to do the dirty work alone and not in a team, in battle, Nero is pretty much the cocky bastard who won’t say no to a battle. Also, he’ll taunt his opponents as he’s engaging in battle, and will slip in a snarky comment or two just to make his opponent realize that he’s not intimidated at all. He’s very proud of himself, his abilities, and his sword, enjoying the thrill whenever he uses the throttle on the handle of the Red Queen that pours an inflammable liquid over his opponents, and just the heat of a fight itself. Plus, let’s not forget how much he cares for how he’s demising his opponents, or he wouldn’t be from this style-obsessed videogame saga.
This doesn’t mean he’s a complete professional, though, as one of the biggest traits of Nero’s behavior is that he gets too much into his fight, and pretty much forgets himself and his surroundings. If anything, you could describe him as a diamond in the rough, with a lot of potential a power coiled within but whose owner needs to learn how to channel it more efficiently.
Besides his confident and cocky demeanor, Nero is also loyal to his friends, those he cares about, and mostly, those he loves. The game is just about how long Nero is able to put his neck on the line for his childhood friend, Kyrie, after all, and he only became deeply involved in the events of the game when he found her in severe danger.

POWER:
Once Nero has a demon-like connection that still wasn’t completely explained because CAPCOM speaks in riddles, he has the usual super-human abilities of being faster, stronger, more agile and with quick regeneration abilities that are part of every half/part-demon devil hunter. Nero also is very proficient with arms, being those guns or swords [don’t get him near an axe, though].
Nero also has a trick up his sleeve, pun intended: his right arm is, from elbow down, scaled, rigged and red, fingers claw-like that would probably leave a scratch mark on concrete easily enough. Besides serving as a powerful shield, it also serves as a weapon - Nero can inigte a holografic projection of it through time and space according to his will, making him able to pull himself across distances instantly and pull enemies to himself [hence its name “Devil Bringer”], not to mention absorb elements of demonic nature to upgrade in power and abilities. Within the red scales, it glows blue as Nero approaches something unnatural and secret, which forewarns Nero to things that mostly aren’t quite what they seem and give him some sort of supernatural sensitivity.
It was with this ability that he acquired the Yamato, making him able to reach his Devil Trigger state. This is a special technique possessed by demons and half-demons which allows them to release their full power. When activated, a translucent shadow of a demon surrounds him and mimics Nero's every attack, increasing their power.

[CHARACTER SAMPLES]
COMMUNITY POST (FIRST PERSON) SAMPLE:

…let me guess. Demon asshole likes kidnap people.

Definitely not knowing what you’re getting yourself into, pal.

Okay, so… First things first, if I find someone who comes up to me with some kind of “Star’s Map” here, let me introduce my fist to your face and give the dentist a hand. This is too much of a freaking cliché already. Same thing applies if any jackass in a taxi honks at me, for the chrissake.

Second, to whoever brought me here: if you wanted me to pay this place a visit, you could’ve just asked. That, at least, could have spared you from the massive beating I will apply if I ever find out who you are. Don’t give me that Portal bullshit, like hell I believe that crap.

Third, how the hell do you get out of this goddamn hellhole?

LOGS POST (THIRD PERSON) SAMPLE:
There was no way Nero was going to take this lightly. There was no way Nero was going to believe in everything going on around and stay put. Everything felt wrong, felt disturbing, and he couldn't help sense a tinge of despair adding up to the rage within him. After everything he did, putting his neck on the line to save his town, his world, his girl, he gets shoved into this weirdass city that was out from a noir movie.

“Give me a break”, he mutters, and makes sure his arm is hidden from view by slipping it under his coat. Last thing he wanted was someone giving him trouble about it; he could already guess the looks at the back of his head and his white hair.
Nero’s eyes lift from the floor upon sensing something approaching, pushing the silver headphones on his head down to curl around his neck, listening to the sound of footsteps getting gradually louder. Nero doesn’t turn off his player, though. If this person was coming to talk to him, then he’d better say something interesting or he’d just move out.
He finally waited till the last moment to turn his head and face the newcomer in the eye, human hand reaching to rub his nose with his thumb upon the sight of the person looming over him, his head tilting to the side with a tinge of insolence.

“What are you looking at?”
