lisette charlotte merlyn.
The first time that she realized that her skin was more than just the outer layer keeping in her organs was when she was 13. She had been studiously doing her homework in her room, knowing that at any moment her father would be coming home. The sounds that were coming from the room next to hers made no sense to her. If anything she thought that the sounds were just coming from the television in her elder sister’s room.
Later she wondered if she should have skipped the problem, but the punishment her father gave when she didn’t complete her tasks made her insides shake. So she innocently took her paper and pencil to knock on her sister’s door. When there was no sound she opened the door, her sense of urgency was coaxed into near panic as the great clock in the hallway ticked ever closer to the time of her father’s arrival. Nibbling her pretty fingernails she waited silently until the sense of panic became too urgent. Charlotte must have fallen asleep with the TV on, Charlotte had the tendency of doing such things-so she opened the door with the intention of asking her sister for help on her homework.
If Eliza has 13 marbles, and Billy has…
That was the problem that she needed help with, but instead of Eliza and Billy, Lisette found herself looking into a slow motion movie. Her cheeks flooded with color, as her hand tightened on the doorknob. What was Charlotte doing-and who was the boy doing it with her?
Billy has 5 marbles, and wants 6 more…
She saw the white limbs of her sister wrapped around the strange boy’s body. Her ears flooded with the sound of panting and breathing, and the sound of what she later would find was need. It was all movement, and bodies, and sweat and sound. The air was thick with things she didn’t understand. At the sound of her sister’s cry she ran back into her room, and sat staring blankly at an empty desk writing haphazard answers to the problems left before her.
All the problems she knew the answers for, but one. Is that what it feels like to be needed by a man?
Is that what the purpose for her skin was?
