My expirience with unlocked phones is that they get really poor reception and drop calls a lot.

a good move is to simply buy a pay-as-you-go from the att and not tell them that you're simply going to swap the card out for the one you have your plan on. you get one of their cheap-ass (indestructible) brick phones for cheap and it's guaranteed to work

This has been bomber for me. Fumbled it onto the pavement from a bike, still works. Has spent lots of time in rough conditions on all of my skiing & backpacking & climbing trips. Small, light, camera is good, mp3 player ($30 for a 2gb card a year ago), FM radio. Check my gmail with the $10/mo unlimited data plan. Love it.
