I have the same situation re:

which I set for Dec 21, 2012 - a date that was many years in the future, at the time - is almost here. I'll have to fling it another little ways into the future.

but last I tried to future-date something, lj wouldn't let me.

Okay, after poking around with it a bit:

It seems like it won't let you future date an entry and still have it appear. You can schedule entries for future dates, but that means they won't appear to the public until that date arrives.

BUT, there's a checkbox in the "Edit Entry" interface that lets you designate an entry "sticky." That means it'll just ignore the date field completely, and always appear at the top of your journal. That solves my main issue; I don't have to change the date at all, just mark that checkbox.
